Online Dessert

Auction for SAFV

Sitkans Against Family Violence’s online dessert auction will run March 4 through 1 p.m. March 7.

The auction is being held in lieu of SAFV’s Family Fiesta fundraiser.

To support SAFV go to tinyurl.com/safvdessertauction to check out desserts and bid. New items will be added frequently.

Bids can be placed by credit card only, which is needed at the time the bid is placed. Bidders will be notified when they are outbid or if they win.

Winners are asked to pick up desserts at the shelter. Call 747-3370 for directions. Individuals unable to pick them up can request a delivery by leaving a message at 738-0161.

Those who can donate a dessert may go to tinyurl.com/safvdessertentry  and submit details of the dessert by March 3.

Quilt Scholarship

Auction Online

Ocean Wave Quilters guild invites all to its annual mini-quilt scholarship auction, which this year is being held on a newly created Facebook page – OWQ 2021 Scholarship Auction.

The quilts are posted and bidding runs through March 6.

Minimum bid on all quilts is $25 and bidders are asked to leave contact information.

Cash, checks and and credit cards will be accepted.

Winners will be notified March 7 and arrangements made for payment and delivery.

All funds raised go toward scholarships for local high school graduating seniors and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

City Water System

Set to be Flushed

The city water department will perform the annual flushing of the distribution mains March 8-17.

The routine maintenance activity may cause localized low pressures and/or cloudy water for a short period of time.

‘‘Should your water become cloudy, simply run your cold water until it clears,’’ the water department said. ‘‘This process does not create any health issues and is standard procedure.’’

The dates and locations to be included are: March 8, outer Lincoln Street; March 9, Monastery Street and Verstovia Street neighborhoods; March 10, Sawmill Creek Road; March 11, Sawmill Creek Road; March 12, downtown area; March 15, Edgecumbe Drive, Halibut Point Road and side streets off HPR; March 16, Edgecumbe Drive, HPR and side streets off HPR; and March 17, Japonski Island.

Electricity Service

Disconnection

Notices to Resume

Disconnection of electricity service for nonpayment will resume March 8 in Sitka following the expiration of the state emergency declaration and subsequent extensions.

The City of Sitka said disconnects for customers on cycle two (bills issued around the 14th of the month) will be the week of March 8, followed by cycle three (bills issued around the 21st of the month), the week of March 15, cycle four (bills issued around the 27th of the month) the week of March 22 and cycle one (bills issued around the 7th of the month) the week of March 29.

‘‘We encourage customers to work with City and Borough of Sitka staff to enter into a payment plan that will ensure that electricity is not disconnected,’’ a press release from the city said.

In addition to the two rounds of utility subsidies approved by the Assembly last year ($1,000 and $539.66), the city said the following programs may provide additional assistance to those unable to pay their bills:

–Alaska Housing has a new program providing up to 12 months of rent and/or utilities (including past due amounts) for eligible Alaskans. The deadline for application to this program is March 5th https://www.alaskahousingrelief.org/;

ANS Meeting

Set Via Zoom

Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will meet 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, via Zoom. Members should attend and anyone who would like to know more about ANS is welcome.

The ANS mission is “to better the lives of Native people and their families; to fight for civil rights and land rights for all Native people; to share cultural knowledge, wisdom, and artistic beauty of Native tribal societies, and to strive for a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood among all people.’’

Health Networking

Meeting March 19

The Sitka Health Summit Coalition’s monthly Wooch.een (together, in Tlingit) health networking and learning meeting will be held noon-1 p.m. Friday, March 19, via Zoom. 

The meeting is to spark partnerships and promote cross sector collaboration, learning, and networking to improve  well-being in Sitka.

STA Offers Help

For CARES Funds

Coronoavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act housing costs and temporary shelter assistance application clinics are being offered by Sitka Tribe of Alaska.

The program is need-based assistance for tribal citizens/Alaska Natives or American Indian community households impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The assistance available is $500 per household, paid directly to a vendor to cover the mortgage, rent, utilities, heating fuel, or boat moorage costs. Invoice verification is required and must be submitted with the application.

The funding also will assist with those experiencing homelessness with temporary shelter. This requires a separate application.

Applications will be accepted until July 31.

CARES Act application clinics will be 1-4:30 p.m. March 5, 10 and 15 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Community House.
