Sales Tax Rate
Changes April 1
Sitka residents are being reminded of the April 1 sales tax rate change.
Tax is to be collected at a rate of 6% for April, May, June, July, August and September.
Long-term commercial rental tax remains at 5% year-round. Bed tax for rentals less than 30 days remains at 6% year-round.
Those who have questions about the collection of sales tax within the City and Borough of Sitka can contact the tax office at 747-1840 or tax@cityofsitka.org.
Ice Cream Cones
For Kindergartners
The Sitka Swirls ice cream truck will be at the Baranof Elementary playground 4-5:30 p.m. Friday, April 2, to hand out free swirl cones to incoming kindergartners.
Principal Jill Lecrone will be present to answer questions about kindergarten registration and life at Baranof Elementary School. Children entering kindergarten will receive a free swirl cone.
Broadway Night
Slated for April 3
Sitka Fine Arts Camp will host a Night on Broadway 7 p.m. April 3 at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.
Songs will be from smash musicals such as ‘‘Six,’’ ‘‘Into the Woods,’’ ‘‘Chicago’’ and ‘‘Hamilton,’’ featuring local talent Rhiannon Guevin and professional actors Sam Faustine, Jessica Mohr and Branden Noel Thomas, last seen in Sitka for ‘‘Songs for a New World.’’
Masks are required. Tickets for a limited-capacity live show as well as livestream tickets are available at www.fineartscamp.org.
Easter Bread
Sale on April 3
St. Michael the Archangel parish will hold an Easter bread – Kulich in Russian – fundraiser sale at the Cathedral entry 11 a.m. until sold out on Saturday, April 3.
‘‘The community is invited to come see why kulich has been a favorite tradition in Sitka since the 1800s,’’ the Cathedral said.
Bakers are reminded to take Easter bread or other Easter baked good donations to the Cathedral by 10 a.m. on sale day or call 738-4166 or 747-6737.
Alaska Day Button
Contest Underway
The Alaska Day Festival Committee is holding a contest for designing this year’s Alaska Day button.
This year’s theme is ‘‘Coming Together.’’
Entries can be submitted by email at alaskadayfestival1867@gmail.com by May 1. A monetary prize of $200 will be awarded to the winning design.

Meets April 3
Sitka women are invited to the Sitka Woman’s Club meeting noon Saturday, April 3, at Westmark Sitka.

Artist Kirtkness
Zoom Talk Set
A Zoom talk and discussion with wood artist Jim Kirkness of Sitka is planned 5 p.m. April 1, sponsored by the Island Artists Gallery.
Kirkness is building a reproduction card table from the Federal period of American woodworking (1785-1815).

Racially Equitable
Meeting on Tap
Those wanting to create more racially equitable organizations are invited to a free monthly Zoom meeting 2-3 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. The next gathering will be April 1.
The purpose of the group is to provide a space for conversation, learning, support, and healthy accountability for local decision makers and residents who are interested in systemic improvements, a press release said.
The program is supported by UAS-Sitka Campus, Sitka Counseling and the Sitka Health Summit Coalition.
