Easter Workshop
For Children Set
The United Methodist Church of Sitka invites parents and children of all ages to a free Easter workshop for kids 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Centennial Hall, in Room 2.
Participants can eat popcorn with Snickers the rabbit, create Easter and Lenten crafts, win prizes, and other activities. For more information, call Mary Stevens, 907-752-2048.
Herring Camp,
Symposium Set
Those in kindergarten through high school, and their families, are invited to attend a Herring Camp 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Halibut Point Recreation Area main shelter.
Tom Gamble, of Alaska Native Indigenous Training Academy, will lead the event with guest presenters Doug Smarch, Teslin, Yukon Territory, Canada, and Dr. Tom Thornton, UAS dean of sciences.
Leaders will engage participants in hands-on learning activities about herring as a cultural and keystone species, the importance of herring and herring eggs as a resource for subsistence, and other topics.
A herring symposium will be held online 5-6:30 p.m. for participants. Presenters Thornton, Dr. Norma Shorty of UAS, and herring researcher Heather Mueret will give information about their past research and issues of conservation of herring.
