Sitka High Gets
$10K Grant for
Vocational Ed
Under the leadership of vocational education teacher Mike Vieira, Sitka High School has leveraged support from local government, businesses, state and federal grants to establish a career and technical education facility – and a recent $10,000 STEM grant from BP Alaska is helping to add a new plasma cutter.
Over the last 10 years, Sitka High has invested in revising its CAD computer lab, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, routers and more, a school news release said. The last area the school needs to improve is its machining and manufacturing.
The $10,000 grant will help the school purchase a CNC plasma cutter, a machine generally used in manufacturing to make precision cuts of metal, guided by pre-programmed computer software.
“Sitka High School’s CTE Department is incredibly grateful to receive the $10,000 BP STEM grant,” Vieira said. “The ... grant will allow our students to experience modernized metal manufacturing processes through the purchase of a CNC plasma cutter. This is the first step of a process to introduce our students to metal manufacturing using CNC plasma cutters, water jet cutters and CNC Mills.
“We hope to produce graduates who are ready to step into high- wage, highly skilled, high demand jobs in manufacturing with fluency in Computer Aided Drafting.”
In partnership with the Alaska Principals Foundation administered by the Alaska Council of School Administrators, schools across Alaska are putting final BP STEM grants ....
“We know research shows that students who take two or more career and technical courses in high school graduate at much higher rates than their peers. In addition, 91 percent of those students enrolled in post-secondary training.” Sitka High School Principal Laura Rogers said.
