Dies at Age 65

Anita Marie Leonard of Sitka died Saturday, March 4, at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. She was 65.

 

Emblem Club Meets

Sitka Emblem Club 142 will hold a business meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the Elks Lodge. All members are invited to attend.

 

School Board

Sets Meeting

The Sitka School District School Board will hold an executive session noon Tuesday in the district office boardroom to discuss a response to Sitka Education Association’s communication regarding grievance #01-2022.

 

Policy Committee

Meeting on Tap

Sitka School District’s Policy Committee will meet 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, in the district office boardroom. The meeting is open to the public.

 

School Budget

Discussed March 9

Members of the Sitka School District School Board will hold a budget work session 6 p.m. March 9 at Harrigan Centennial Hall. The public is invited to attend.

 

Harp Sing Set

All are invited to learn to sing four-part a capella harmony in the Sacred Harp (shape note) tradition 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at the Pioneers Home chapel.

 

Beginners and listeners are welcome. Singing is from the red Denson  and Christmas books. Loaner books are available. Masks are optional. For information call Sara at 747-2915.

 

Natural History

Seminars Resume

UAS-Sitka Campus natural history seminar talks will resume in person 7 p.m. March 16 in room 229 at UAS.

Simon Hook will present “The Wonders of Antarctica.’’ 

‘‘The penguins of Antarctica are amazing and dynamic, but there is so much more to learn about the white continent,’’ UAS said. 

Hook will cover the general natural history of penguins, as well as some of the other well adapted creatures found in and around this very cold place.  Included will be wildlife photos and landscapes from his recent stint as a guide in Antarctica.
