STA Closure

Sitka Tribe of Alaska Social Services Department will be closed May 8-17 to move to its new location at 204 Siginaka Way.

Call the STA main number, 747-3207, during this time and leave a message for social services regarding needs requiring immediate action.

 

Chicken Adobo

Cooking Class On

Learn how to make chicken adobo with a boiled egg, chicken tinola (soup) and other dishes at the Sitka Kitch class ‘‘Filipino Cooking with David Felts and Sonia Malabot-Felts’’ 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at the lower level of Sitka Lutheran Church.

The class is part of ar Cooking Around the World series and is a fundraiser for the Sitka Kitch.

David and Sonia are husband and wife, and they have lived in Sitka about seven years. They met in the Philippines, and ran a restaurant together in the town of Makati. Over the years, they hosted Fourth of July and other booths in town. They both work at the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus.

The menu will include chicken adobo and chicken tinola as the main dishes; pork lumpia, pancit bihon and rice as the side dishes; and banana turon as the dessert.

The registration deadline is 11:30 p.m. May 11. The class costs $40, which is part of our new all-inclusive fee system. Register and pre-pay using credit/debit cards or PayPal at http://sitkakitch.eventsmart.com (click on class title).

SNEP Year-End

Program Friday

Sitka Native Education Program will hold its end of the year program 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Performing Arts Center.

Wooch.een Preschool students and those enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade culture classes will perform with singing, dancing and drumming.

The program will feature a display of traditional art made by students throughout the year.

 

 

Harp Sing Set

The fourth Sunday sacred harp sing will be 3:30-5 p.m. May 26 at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

All are invited to learn to sing four-part a cappella harmony in an American tradition dating hundreds of years. Beginners and listeners are welcome. Singing will be from the red Denson book, and loaner books are available. For information, call Sara at 747-2915.

 

 

School Board

Attends Assembly

Meeting May 2

Members of the Sitka School Board will be attending the Special Assembly meeting on May 2. The Assembly will be discussing the City’s local contribution to the School District.

 

Mother’s Day

Movie at Library

Mother’s Day will be celebrated at the Sitka Public Library with a movie showing of   ‘‘Mamma Mia!’’ 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

The event is free, open to the public, and snacks will be provided. For information, call 747-4025.

 

Healthy After 60

Series to Begin

Healthy After 60 will return with a three-month series focusing on ‘‘Aging in Place’’ 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Sitka Public Library.

Kaagwaantaan Meet

Sitka Kaagwaantaan will meet 3 p.m. Sunday in room 114 at Blatchley Middle School.

The agenda includes nominations and election of the  board of directors for the Kaagwaantaan Inc. non-profit, summer plans and song practice. For  information call Roby at 738-4004.

 

Women of Moose

To Meet May 6

Women of the Moose will hold its first meeting of the new chapter year 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, upstairs at the Sitka Moose Lodge.

All new officers and chairs are encouraged to attend. Membership will be divided between the chairs. Calendar of chair dates, and other events, will be discussed as well as the upcoming conference that the lodge and chapter are hosting for Alaska.

WOTM meetings will be held on the first and third Mondays at 6:30 p.m. during the chapter year. 

The lodge will host a Mother’s Day breakfast, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. May 12. The lodge is smoke-free, and all family members can attend. For information call Faith at 752-0306, or stop by the lodge.

 

National Guard

Explorers Gather

The Alaska Army National Guard Explorers will meet 6-9 p.m. May 8 at the Sitka Armory, 1508 Sawmill Creek Road.

High school students between ages 14 and 20 who are interested in learning leadership and skills such as survival, combatives, land navigation, patrol techniques, camouflage self and equipment, and medical should attend. For information contact SFC Justin Mullenix at 907-290-4306.

 

Family Day at

Hames Center

Hames Center will host its final Family Fun Day of the season 3-5 p.m. Sunday, May 5.

Toys, bouncy castles and climbing wall are a few of the offerings. The event is free for all due to the Hames Wellness Fund. For information call Hames Center at 747-5080 or visit www.hamescenter.org. 

 

Fiesta Dinner

Benefit for Team

Sitka Fastpitch Softball Club will hold a Cinco de Mayo fiesta dinner fundraiser 5-7 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

The taco feed is $15 each. A dessert auction will follow. The event is for team travel to Oregon. All events held at the Elks Lodge are for members and invited guests.
