At Press Club
Raven Radio, KCAW-FM, reporters, staff members and volunteers took home prizes in several categories in the annual Alaska Press Club statewide contest.
Awards were announced at the end of the annual conference April 20-22 in Anchorage:
Tash Kimmel, first place, best series, all media, “Black in Sitka,”; second place, best food reporting, all media, “Will lab-grown fish save Alaska’s wild salmon stocks?”
Rob Woolsey, second place, best headline writing, all media, “Is Sitka’s hotter-than-average inflation a touch of pipeline fever?”; second place, best business reporting, radio, “After 38 years as a ‘ramper’ Tim Fulton designed a better way to load planes. Now he wants to build it.”
Katherine Rose, third place, best investigative reporting, all media, “A Sitka high rise apartment’s lone elevator has been out of service for more than a year, and tenants are frustrated”; third place, best sound rich feature, radio, “We did a deep dive into the bathrooms on Lincoln Street so you don’t have to”; first place, best profile, radio, “Meet the Sitkan behind the music of a certain cartoon cynical cartoon cephalopod-Kat; second place, best arts reporting, radio, “A curious approach to vending makes ‘cents’ in Sitka.”

SYLC Campaign Premier May 4
Members of the Sitka Youth Leadership Committee invite the public to the premier of the ‘‘Mold Your Masculinity’’ campaign videos 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at Sitka Public Library.
SYLC members will tell what they’ve learned about harmful masculinity norms and engage the audience in conversation and creative writing activities to deepen understanding, create space for self reflection, and inspire change, organizers said. Teens and adults are welcome, but space is limited.

Quilters Meet
Ocean Wave Quilters will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at United Methodist Church.
Monthly meetings, September through June, are open to all, members or not. Those wishing to pay the $25 dues receive a monthly newsletter, discounts on classes and other benefits. For information call President Sarah Jordan at 907-738-7272.
Pioneers to Meet
On Thursday
Sitka Pioneers of Alaska will have a history program and potluck 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at the Unitarian Hall, 408 Marine Street.
Longtime Alaskans are invited to attend.

Fisherman’s Flea
Market May 13
The annual Fisherman’s Flea Market will be held 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 13, at the Mt. Edgecumbe High School and UAS-Sitka Campus parking lots.
Those with marine-related items to sell are asked to load up their vehicles and park in front of the MEHS gym prior to 9 a.m. Buyers can park in the UAS parking lot. For more information contact Denise at 907-747-5012.

Summer Tumbling
Classes Added
The City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation will open registration for additional summer tumbling programming on May 3 at recreationatcityofsitka.com.
Tongass Tumblers is a gymnastics program led by Trisha Bessert focused on trampoline and tumbling. It utilizes a full-sized spring floor, rod floor, super trampoline, and a double mini trampoline.
Classes are held at Keet Gooshi Heen at 307 Kashevaroff Street. Session one is June 5-30. Dates for sessions two and three in July and August are to be announced.

Chess Club Sets
Tourney May 3
The Sitka Chess Club will host a tournament at Sitka Public Library, 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 3.
It will include two scholastic sections and one open or adult section. The tournament is open to all.
