Open Mic Set

Sitka Folk and the Greater Sitka Arts Council will host an open mic May 19 at the Beak Restaurant. Performers can sign up at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Fiber Friends Meet

Fiber Friends will meet noon-2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the Gus Adams room at Sitka Public Library.

Weavers, spinners, dyers and others who work with fibers are welcome.  For additional information contact Marian Allen at 738-1970.

 

Tweens Invited

To Summer Club

Sitka Public Library is inviting teens, ages 11 to 13, to join the Be-tween Summer Club.

Members will meet every other Friday at the library, 6-7 p.m. The Summer Club will host different events to inspire creativity, thinking outside the box, and leadership skills. The program will appeal to tweens craving independence and connection, the library said.

The first event will be a ‘‘Shoot for the Stars’’ party May 24. Tweens of all abilities are welcome. Registration is required.

The initiative is part of the ‘‘A Universe of Stories!’’ Summer Library Program. For information, call the library at 747-8708.

 

 

White E Shop

Hours Expand

Beginning May 15 the White Elephant Shop will be open on Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. 

It also is open noon-3 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays, and 6-9 p.m. Mondays.

 

Deadline May 17

For Quilt Ballots

Deadline to cast viewers-choice ballots at Ocean Wave Quilters annual quilt show is 5 p.m. Friday, May 17.

Voters may vote for their favorites in three size and one theme categories. 

The show is hanging in Whitmore Hall on the SJ Campus through 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19.  Hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Saturday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.

 

Chamber to Meet

Robert Venables, executive director of Southeast Conference, will speak at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.

Chamber luncheons are open to the public.

 

Salmon Release

Party at SSSC 

The Sitka Sound Science Center will host a salmon release party 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16.

‘‘This annual event is a way for us to celebrate our final release of the year, as we say goodbye to the 2017 year coho salmon,’’ the science center said.

 

Participants can release their own salmon beginning at 5:15 p.m. until they run out. A bonfire on the beach and barbecue at a $5 suggested donation per plate are planned.
