‘Masculinity’ is

Campaign Topic

The Sitka Youth Leadership Committee’s Mold Your Masculinity campaign is encouraging men and boys to break free from the status quo and accept masculinity in all its forms.

The group is sponsored by Sitkans Against Family Violence.

‘‘Society defines masculinity as being physically strong, aggressive, superior, and in control,’’ SYLC said. ‘‘Young men who conform to these limiting gender norms are at increased risk for poor mental health, risky behavior, and suicidal thoughts. Together, we can break free from the confines of harmful masculinity norms.’’

SYLC is a group of teens dedicated to working on an array of topics in the community, including shifting norms around masculinity.
