Memorial Set For
Margarette Gordon
A memorial for Margarette Mary Gordon will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the United PentecostalChurch, 101 Cascade Creek Road.
Those attending are welcome to bring a dish to share, or just enjoy a meal in Margarette’s honor.
Margarette, who had lived in Sitka since 1975, died April 3 at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center. She was 89.
SCLT to Meet
Sitka Community Land Trust will meet 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 22, at the Hames corporate office conference room at 208 Lake Street, Suite B.

Kimber Earns
Master’s Degree
Sydnee R. Kimber has graduated from McKendree University with a master of science degree in athletic training.
The Mt. Edgecumbe High School graduate is the daughter of Mike and Charlotte Kimber.
Founded in 1828, McKendree University’s historic Lebanon, Illinois, campus is 25 miles from St. Louis, Missouri.

Panel to Meet

Forest Service
Seeking Input
As part of the next phase in the USDA’s Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy, the USDA Forest Service is asking for community input, ideas, and values to better inform their activities and work in ways that best benefit Southeast Alaskans.
This week, there are several ways to comment.
The Sitka Ranger District will hold two community workshops at Centennial Hall to tell more about SASS and engage locals about how they can prioritize the voices and needs of communities on the Tongass. Workshops are planned 1-8 p.m. May 19 and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. May 20 at Centennial Hall.

Sport Fishing
Rules Offered
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, NOAA, and U.S. Coast Guard will host a public meeting regarding the sport fishing season 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Centennial Hall.
Staff will be available to answer questions regarding rules, regulations, and/or charter requirements.
Kruzof Island
Bird Cruise Set
All are invited to join Sitka Conservation Society staff to the shores of Kruzof Island to view the birds that inhabit the area.
The cruise is slated 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 3, at Crescent Harbor. Boarding begins at 8:45 a.m.
Tickets are $65 per person and are available for purchase at Old Harbor Books with cash or check starting May 19. Space is limited. Attendees should take their own water and snacks.
Sablefish Tag
Rewards Given
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game each year rewards those who return an ADF&G sablefish tag with a reward, such as T-shirt or cup.
Each tag returned to the department with complete recovery information – fisherman’s name, date of recovery, and latitude and longitude – is entered into a random drawing for a cash prize. A total of 704 tags qualified for this year’s drawing.
The following were randomly selected from the list of qualified tags as the winners of the 2023 annual sablefish tag recovery incentive drawing:

Food Pantry
AC Lakeside and Sitka Conservation Society are teaming up to make a $1,500 joint donation to the Sitkans Against Family Violence food pantry.
‘‘Food insecurity is a pressing ongoing concern for many communities across Alaska,’’ SAFV said. ‘‘AC Lakeside and SCS’s donations add to generous food drive contributions from local businesses, organizations and individuals and will allow SAFV to replenish in-demand grocery items on a rolling basis.’’
Those in need of food assistance can contact a SAFV advocate at 907-747-3370. Bags of food staples are distributed to anyone in need, no questions asked.
Rotary Club Sets
Work Day at
Goddard May 21
Sitka Rotary Club will hold its annual work day at Goddard Hot Springs on Sunday, May 21.
Tubs may not be available for use by the public between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while the Rotary Club and volunteers do cleaning and maintenance.
Since the 1970s, the Sitka Rotary Club has been a partner to the City and Borough of Sitka in constructing and maintaining the facilities at Goddard.
Many other groups, including the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, Sitka Elks Lodge, and Sitka Trail Works, have partnered with the city.
Individual Sitkans also provide their expertise and labor to keep the Goddard tubs in working condition for the community.
The Sitka AmeriCorps and Jesuit Volunteers groups will assist the Rotary Club this year, as they have for most of the last 20 years, the Rotary Club said. Allen Marine Tours will once again provide round-trip transportation to and from Goddard.
The Rotary Club extended appreciation for the help of volunteers and to Allen Marine.

Porch Fest
Activities Set
For May 20
Music, art and dancing will be a part of Porch Fest activities 11 a.m.-9 p.m. May 20 in downtown Sitka.
Lincoln Street will be closed 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Music will continue at the KCAW stage until 9 p.m.
Greater Sitka Arts Council raffle tickets at $15 each are available for a chance to win two Alaska Airlines tickets (sponsored by Alaska Airlines), and $250 and $100 Sea Mart gift cards. The drawing will be at 7 p.m. at the evening Porch Fest concert. The winner need not be present to win. Proceeds support the arts in Sitka through the Greater Sitka Arts Council.
