Dies at Age 72
Longtime Sitka resident Martha Susan Barker died Monday at the Pioneers Home. She was 72.
An obituary will be published later this week.
Correction
In the Sitka High School graduation story published on the front page of Monday’s Sentinel, the photo of Audrey Saiz, one of the valedictorians, was incorrect.
Audrey plans to attend Oregon State University Honors College in the fall.

Community Event
A documentation event is being held for Sitka cemeteries, and the public is invited to help preserve and share the histories.
The BillionGraves event will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, with the public meeting at the skatepark gazebo. Maps, instructions and tips will be offered. Needed are cloth or small brooms to gently clean off graves. People should dress for the weather.
The group will gather at noon at the gazebo for sharing stories. People can take their own picnic lunches.

The event is sponsored by the Sitka Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints using the Just Serve and BillionGrave apps.
Once participants have finished taking photos they can upload them to the app where photos will be available immediately around the globe.

Focus of Event
Philippine Independence Day will be celebrated as part of the Active Family Outdoor Challenge 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 12.
Those wanting to help with the event are invited to a meeting 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at the Baranof Elementary School parking lot. The group will discuss adding family friendly activities to the Philippine Independence Day event.
Chalk drawing, a large-scale creation of the Philippine flag, and basketball Bump contests are activities in the works.

Work Party at
Japonski Boatshop
The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will hold a volunteer work party to rebuild a wall on the Japonski Island Boatshop 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 29.
Volunteers of all skill levels are invited to take gloves and tools if they have them for part or all the time. Project leaders will provide training in historic preservation, coffee and snacks.

Chamber Speaker
Series Continues
Garry White, Sitka Economic Development Association executive director, will present Sitka’s economic trends noon Wednesday during the Chamber of Commerce Spring Speaker Series.
Registration for the Zoom event is open at the Chamber Website.
White will review the latest information from the McKinley Research Group presenting Sitka’s economic indicators and the effect of COVID-19 on the economy.
