Pacific High

Graduation

Slated May 13

Pacific High School will hold its graduation ceremony 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Odess Theater on the SJ Campus.

This year’s graduates are Xandra Gray-Young, Reece Lowe, Frederic McCleland, Hannah Mosher, Raven Richards, Silas Rioux and Ceridwen Snelling.

Emblem Club

Meets Thursday

Sitka Emblem Club 142 will hold a business meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

Nominations and elections will be held for recording secretary and first trustee. All members in good standing are qualified for nomination, and are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Carol or Judi.

 

POPS Concert Set

At Blatchley School

Blatchley Middle School will  hold its annual POPS concert May 9 at the school.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the ice cream social and silent bidding on auction items. The concert begins at 7 p.m.

Parents and other volunteers are needed and may contact Drew Larson at larsond@sitkaschools.org or Meghan Devine at devinem@sitkaschools.org. Also needed are donations of items to be auctioned off, including artwork, gift certificates or services. 

 

National Bike Month

Events Planned in Sitka

May is National Bike Month, and the Sitka Cycling Club has a variety of local events to help people celebrate.

Some of the highlights this month include, a commuter bicycling class on May 6, several Saturdays of open hours at the Salty Spoke Bike Co-op, a bike movie night on May 10, a Sitka Cycling Club meeting on May 12, a community bike ride on May 13, National Bike To Work Week on May 15-19, National Bike To Work Day on May 19, Porch Fest bike tuneups on May 20, the Julie Hughes Triathlon on May 20, and a Trail Master Summit June 3-4.

The commuter bicycling class will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Salty Spoke Bicycle Cooperative at 1 Lincoln Street, next to the Cable House. Attendees should take a bike and helmet for the riding portion of the workshop. For more information text (650) 943-0055.

Natural History

Seminar on Tap

“An Update on Mt. Edgecumbe Goings-On, from the Alaska Volcano Observatory” will be the Natural History seminar feature 7 p.m. Monday, May 8, at the University of Alaska Southeast,  room 229. The seminar is free and open to the public.

The talk will provide an update on the low-level unrest that is occurring at Mt. Edgecumbe and will describe plans by the Alaska Volcano Observatory and partners to study and monitor it. Audience questions are being encouraged.

Visit Sitka Plans

Summer Expo

Visit Sitka will host its annual Summer Expo 3-6 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Centennial Hall.

It is held trade show-style, and offers a chance for the community to meet with tours, activities, and attractions that will be available for the summer season.

The event is free and open to the public. Booth spaces are free for Visit Sitka partners. Partners may register online at business.sitkachamber.com/events/calendar before Friday, May 5, to host a booth.Limited space is available and offered on a first-come, first-served, basis.
