Eighty-two Mt. Edgecumbe High School seniors will graduate in a ceremony to be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.
Teacher Christy Anderson will give the commencement address. She has been teaching for more than 20 years and became part of the Edgecumbe family in 2002, She has been a counselor, teacher and the National Honor Society co-adviser.
Anderson received the BP Teacher of Excellence Award in 2014.
Also speaking will be valedictorian Jonah McClenahan of Sitka and salutatorian Roderick Huntington of Unalakleet. The senior class selected Adonna Jo Adams of Kotzebue and Josh DeAsis of Juneau as student representative speakers.
Superintendent Janelle Vanasse will give the welcome, and academic counselor Joel Leuders present awards. Teachers will present diplomas. Parents will be honored during the ceremony.
Marshals, chosen by the senior class, are Adeline Dement of Bethel and Haley Osborne of Nome. The junior ushers are Gregory Bourdukofsky of St. Paul, Joeli Carlson of Bethel, Laura Fields of Kotzebue, Jasper Kuhne of Bethel, Leah Lekanof of Anchorage, and Eedan Ross of Fairbanks.
The class motto is “We didn’t know we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun” – Pooh Bear. The class colors are cardinal and gold.
Those attending graduation are invited to join graduates, friends and family for a luncheon at the MEHS student cafeteria after the ceremony.
Baccalaureate is scheduled 7 p.m. May 8 at the Assembly of God Church with a reception to follow. The featured speaker will be MEHS teacher Margo Livermore. The event will include songs of worship and student testimonies.
