The new director for the University of Alaska Southeast’s Sitka Campus began work this week.
Paul Kraft, who was dean of students and enrollment management at UAS from 2001 to 2006, returned to campus Tuesday. He replaces Math Trafton, who’s served as interim director since the departure of Leslie Gordon in December.
Kraft will be the campus’ chief executive officer, responsible for strategic planning and budget management, instructional activities, facilities management, and day-to-day operations.
He will report to UAS Provost Karen Carey.

Kraft will work with university leaders at the Juneau and Ketchikan campuses, and will collaborate with the Sitka Campus Advisory Council. In addition, Kraft will join campus directors across Alaska as part of the UA Community Campus Directors Council.

Kraft came to UAS from Lamar Community College in Colorado, where he was director of the My Advancement Plan Center. He has previously served in student services leadership positions at Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon, Western Colorado Community College, and the University of New Mexico.
Kraft earned his doctorate of education degree in adult and higher education administration from Montana State University, Bozeman. He also holds a master of science degree in counseling and guidance from Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and a bachelor of science degree in sociology.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Dr. Kraft back to UAS,” said Chancellor Rick Caulfield. “He brings a strong focus on adult and community education, which is an important part of our UAS mission.”
UAS Provost Carey also praised Kraft. “He has a wealth of experience and will serve Sitka well,” she said.
