Dies at Age 74

Theresa Louise Helem, a longtime sitka resident, died Nov. 9 in Sitka. She was 74.

An obituary will be published next week.

 

‘Lights On’ Slated

At BMS Nov. 12

The City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation will host “Lights On” 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Blatchley Middle School.

The kickoff for the recreation programs offered by Parks and Recreation

committee will include booths by organizations offering after-school, recreational, and community education programs. Booth space is still available.

It is a free event, open to all ages and includes open gym, roller skating and door prizes.

Pet, Family Photo

Sessions Saturday

Registration is open for the Pet Family Portrait Fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Each 15-minute family photo session – taken with a favorite furry family member – is $100. All profits go directly to Friends of Sitka Animal Shelter.

‘‘We have an awesome lineup of photographers including Dan Evans, Tyler Eddy, Bobbi Jordan, Caitlin Blaisdell and Vincent Balansag,’’ organizers said. ‘‘Tis the season for holiday cards!’’

Veterans Day

Parade Friday

The Veterans Day Parade is planned 11 a.m. on Friday.

Those wanting to participate can meet at the Crescent Harbor parking lot before 11 a.m. The parade will continue down Lincoln Street to Totem Square.

A luncheon will follow at the American Legion Hall.

 

Wild Foods

Potluck Nov. 13

The Sitka Conservation Society is inviting the community to the Wild Foods Potluck 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at Centennial Hall.

It will be an ‘‘evening celebrating the connections that bind us together: food, community, and this place we call home,’’ organizers said.

Attendees are asked to take a dish featuring local wild foods to share. For information contact info@sitkawild.org or call 747-7509.

 

Marine Corps Sets

Birthday Dinner

The Marine Corps will have a birthday dinner at 6 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Elks Lodge.

Sitka Tells Tales 

On Tap Nov. 15

Sitka Tells Tales, the local live storytelling series, will present “Mysterious: Stories of Ghosts, UFOs, Aliens & Others…” 7-8 p.m. Nov. 15 downstairs at the Mean Queen. 

It also will air and stream  live on KCAW Raven Radio (KCAW.ORG.)

CG Auxiliary

Meets Friday

The Sitka Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will meet 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the small building on the government pier where the buoy tender Kukui is tied.

New members are being sought for the organization, which meets monthly. No prior service in the Coast Guard or any branch of the military is required.The Auxiliary’s office is in the building on the right as you drive onto the pier.

Parking is in the lot at the Marine Safety Detachment Station.

The group of civilian volunteers work with the Coast Guard. Its main mission is promoting boating safety.

It is a regular meeting; however, the group has set aside time to answer questions about what they do and how to join. For further information call (907) 738-8891.

 

Native Youth

Olympics At

SJ Museum

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum invite the public to attend its second event in the Winter Share Your Culture/Share Your Research series noon Friday, Nov. 18, at the museum and on Zoom.

The event is free and open to all. Mt. Edgecumbe High School students will give a Native Youth Olympics Games demonstration.

‘‘This will be a fun, shorter, more intimate version of NYO Games with the students introducing themselves to the audience before engaging in a friendly competition,’’ the museum said.

Native Youth Games typically includes 10 events based on games that past generations of Alaska Native peoples played to test their hunting and survival skills, increase strength, agility, and endurance, and balance the body and mind. Events are based on traditional Alaska Native activities and offer insight into cultural heritage of Alaska Natives. The competition is open to all Alaska students from seventh to 12th grade, regardless of ethnicity. The official NYO Games will be in April 2022 in Anchorage.

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is dedicated to supporting the museum and its Alaska Native ethnographic collection through advocacy, acquisition and educational programming, a spokesperson said.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and is closed holidays. The museum is open by appointment only on Tuesdays. Elects Officers

Sitkans Against Family Violence Executive Director Natalie Wojcik has announced new board officers.

Yeidikook’áa Dionne Brady-Howard has been named board chair. Dave Levesque was re-elected vice-chair and treasurer; and Cheryl Vastola was re-elected as secretary.

SAFV also expressed appreciation to Maite Lorente for her years of service as board chair.

Networking Set

The Sitka Health Summit Coalition’s monthly Wooch.een (together, in Tlingit) health networking and learning meeting will be held virtually noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, via Zoom.

The purpose of the meeting is to spark partnerships and promote cross sector collaboration, learning, and networking to improve the well-being in Sitka.

For Holiday Assist

Those wanting to sign up for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance from the Salvation Army may register at the following days and times.

Stop by the Salvation Army 2:30-5:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through Nov. 18

It is also available 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 12.

Those registering should take: identification for all adults in the home; identification for all the kids in the home (birth certificate, shot records, Denali insurance card); proof of residence.

 

Woman’s Club

Slated Saturday

Sitka Woman’s Club members will meet noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Marina Pizza and Grill, 201 Katlian Street.

The group will discuss the Single Mother’s Scholarship launch and plan for January’s holiday party.
