Fall Arts, Crafts

Workshop by 4-H

Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H Club will hold its fall arts and crafts workshop 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10.

During the session, open to ages 5-9, natural and recycled materials will be used. For information or registration, contact emily@sitkawild.org. 

 

4-H Group Bakes

Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H club will work on baking skills and create recipe cards 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11.

It is open to ages 5-18. Email emily@sitkawild.org for information and to register.

Night Safety Hikes

Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H Club will explore Sitka at night and practice staying safe as it gets darker earlier outside. Night hikes will be offered at different locations 3:30-5 p.m. Nov. 17, 24 and Dec. 1. It is open to ages 5-18. Email emily@sitkawild.org for information and to register.

 

Birding Walk

Offered by 4-H

Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H club will host a birding walk with Hannah 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, from the Alaska Raptor Center.  It is open to ages 5-18.

SCT to Present

Radio Adventure

Hour on Stage

GSAC Sitka Community Theater will present Radio Adventure Hour 7 p.m. Friday, November 12, at the Performing Arts Center.

The show is six short works by local playwrights, performed on stage by local actors, with live sound effects, also on stage. Works will be featured by Sotera Perez, Zeke Blackwell, Rebecca Poulson and Seaton Bryan, and directed by Blackwell, Poulson, Perez and Christian Litten. The show is about an hour in length and features about 20 performers, including the sound effects team.

Tickets are $15 for general, and $10 for students and seniors, at Old Harbor Books and fineartscamp.org under “Shows.” Masks and proof of vaccination are required.

Sitka Community Theater is part of the Greater Sitka Arts Council, with support for this project from Sitka Fine Arts Camp and Raven Radio. 

 

‘Child Find’ Sets

Preschool Screening

Sitka School District provides Child Find Preschool Screenings for children ages 3-5 at the Baranof Elementary School. An appointment is required for the Monday, Nov. 15, screening. For more information, or to schedule one, parents should call 966-1316.

The Child Find program is provided without charge to families who live within school district boundaries.

The program identifies children who are having difficulty in their development, and provides special education services to them, when appropriate.

Parents may have concerns about their child’s development in the areas of hearing, vision, speech/language skills, motor skills, thinking skills or emotional or social skills.

Screenings will be held at least once per quarter, and those dates will be publicized. Additional appointments at other times or locations may be scheduled as needed.

 

Herring Film

Screening Set

The Herring Protectors will host a virtual screening of the film ‘‘Yaa at Woone: Respect for All Things’’ 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. The film will be followed by a panel discussion on how to write comments to the Board of fish in support of herring.

The screening and panel discussion will be streamed over Facebook Live from the official Herring Protectors Facebook page.

‘Woodworking’

Taught to 4-Hers

A three-week “introduction to woodworking” project with Frances Brann is open to all active 4-H members ages 11 to 18 on Friday, Nov. 5, 12 and 19. The group meets 3:30-5 p.m.

The cost is $15 and scholarships are available upon request. Participants will learn the basics of working with wood and tool safety in order to make their own cutting boards and coasters. Space is limited to four participants.

‘Mt. Kilimanjaro’

Presentation on Tap

The public is invited to hear Tim and Leslie Fulton speak 6 p.m. Nov. 18 about their climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The event is part of Sitka Public Library’s Armchair Travels Speaker Series and will be held via Zoom.

Woman’s Club

Assistance Offered

By Salvation Army

Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance is being offered by the Salvation Army of Sitka.

To apply for assistance, stop by the Salvation Army 2:30-5:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 9-11:30 a.m. Saturdays Nov. 1-19.

Applicants should take: identification for adults in the home; verification of children (birth certificate, shot records or Tribal cards); proof of residence (utility bill or other with the home address).
