Furbearer Trapping

Season to Open

The trapping season for marten, river otter, mink and weasel opens Dec. 1 on Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof islands (Unit 4). Beaver season opened Nov. 10. The trapping season runs through Feb. 15 for most species. Exceptions are the marten, mink, and weasel season in the north Chichagof Island area which ends Dec. 31, and the beaver season which remains open through April 30.

Trappers must have a valid trapping license. Marten, river otter, and beaver hides must be sealed within 30 days after the close of the season by ADF&G staff, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, or state-appointed fur sealers.

Trappers are being encouraged to use discretion in the placement of traps near trails, recreational and residential areas where people and pets congregate and to avoid placing them in high-use areas to minimize conflicts between trappers and other users, ADF&G said. Pet owners are reminded to maintain control over their pets to reduce encounters with legally set traps. Leash laws, where applicable, should be followed.

A person may not obstruct, hinder, or disturb a lawful trapping effort, regulations state.

For information about trapping, call the Sitka Fish and Game office at 747-5449 or the Alaska Wildlife Troopers at 747-3254. For detailed regulations, refer to the 2018-2019 Alaska Trapping Regulations or online at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov.

‘Nanook’ to Show

At SJ Museum

The Sheldon Jackson Museum will have film screening of ‘‘Nanook of the North’’ 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. The screening will be followed by an informal discussion on the themes of the film, its significance in the history of cinematography, and controversies surrounding its making.

Robert Flaherty’s classic film tells the story of Inuit hunter Nanook and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh conditions of Canada’s Hudson Bay region. Enormously popular when released in 1922, ‘‘Nanook of the North’’ is a cinematic milestone that continues to enchant audiences, the museum said. An informal discussion about the film, its criticisms, and groundbreaking nature will follow.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission will be waived for the film screening, which is sponsored by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum. Call 747-8981 with any questions about the museum’s programming.
