Unitarians Meet

The Unitarian Fellowship meeting Sunday will be a continuing conversation about sources that assist in the search for truth and meaning. Participants are invited to share a poem that has been a source of inspiration.

Gathering begins at 10:30 a.m., with the program at 10:45 a.m. Bread and soup follow at noon. The Fellowship Hall is at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street. 

 

Sports Schedule

At Hames Center

Hames Center has updated its evening sports schedule.

Volleyball is offered 6-8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; basketball, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday; climbing wall, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday; and floor hockey, 8-9:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Sports are pick up games and open to all levels; however, a general knowledge of the sport is encouraged. For information call Hames Center 747-5080 or visit www.hamescenter.org. 

 

 

ANB to Meet

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 will meet 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the ANB Founders Hall.

Rummage, Clam

Chowder Sale Set

St. Michael’s Cathedral will host a rummage, clam chowder and fried bread sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 17 in the basement of St. Michael’s Cathedral.

Tables are available to rent for rummage and handmade items at $25 for a long one, and $20 for round.

DKG to Initiate

Delta Kappa Gamma will meet 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School in Room 26.

The meeting will include initiation of two new members, and organizing cookie trays in support of American Education Week.

 

STA Sponsors

Dinner, Movie

Sitka Tribe of Alaska Resource Protection Department will sponsor “Dinner and Movie Night” as part of Native American Heritage Month 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A brief presentation will be given and  the movie “More than Frybread” starts at 7:30 p.m.

Tribal Elders

Honored Nov. 29

The second annual Honoring Tribal Elders Luncheon will be 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Centennial Hall. New this year is the addition of an elder legal clinic.

A welcome and blessing of the food is planned at 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon Tribal Council swearing-in ceremony, and the noon luncheon in the auditorium, hosted by the STA Social Services Department. The legal clinic is 1-4 p.m. in the Raven Room, hosted by the legal department. Attorneys will assist elders with preparing: simple wills; advanced care health directives; and durable power of attorney.

Bahá’ís to Host

Tuesday Devotional

The Bahá’ís of Sitka invite the public to a devotional/prayer circle, 5:30-6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

Everyone who attends can participate, if they wish, by saying a prayer or reading a brief spiritual message. 

‘‘One of the basic tenets of the Bahá’í Faith is unity and oneness,’’ a press release from the group said. ‘‘In the spirit of unity, and with a desire to share devotions with fellow Sitkans of all faiths and ethnicities, we invite all to the first community devotional circle.’’

Kayak Video

To Show Nov. 14

A video presentation of the 2003 kayak trip from Aappilattoq to Upernavik will be presented by Gail Ferris 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Room 108 of the Rasmuson Building on the SJ Campus.

‘‘Visiting and chatting then paddling from Aappilattoq to Upernavik with more moments in fine paddling, oops it wasn’t so fine,’’ Ferris said.

Services Nov. 17

For Joseph Reeves

Services for Joseph Reeves, 60, will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Moose Lodge Sitka, upstairs.

Mr. Reeves, administrator for the Sitka Moose Lodge and longtime resident of Sitka, died on Oct. 6 due to complications from a previous medical condition, while in Fairbanks for a Moose Convention.
