Sets Presentations,

Alaska Day Events

The Sitka Historical Society and Museum invites the public to two historical presentations this week.

The group’s annual meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Centennial Hall with the topic ‘‘Chichagof Mines: Fact, Fiction and Future.’’ Curt Freeman, past director of Alaska Miners Association, will present.

Participants will learn about the Chichagof area’s gold deposits, miners, townsfolk and rogues. The speaker will examine the mining district’s role as a 21st century geologic model for some of the world’s largest bodies of gold ore.

At 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Centennial Hall, Rear Admiral Nathan Moore will present ‘‘‘Tales of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska.’’

Moore will speak on the long history and strong connection the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Coast Guard have to Alaska by relating stories of service and sacrifice.

Alaska Day Festival activities being planned by the Sitka Historical Society and Museum are a barbecue brisket cook-off contest Oct. 14-15 and a brew cruise 2:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

CG Auxiliary

Meets Oct. 13;

Members Sought

The Sitka Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will meet 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the small building on the government pier where the buoy tender is tied. The group meets monthly

New members are being sought. They need not have been in the Coast Guard or any other branch of the military to join.

The auxiliary office is in the building on the right on the pier. Parking is available on the lot at the Marine Safety Detachment Station.

The group of civilian volunteers  work with the Coast Guard and the main mission is promoting boating safety.

 

It is a regular meeting; however,  time has been set aside to answer questions as to what the organization does and how to join. For further information call (907) 738-8891.

 

Film Society, Coliseum

Show Mini Filmfest

The Sitka Film Society and Coliseum Theater will present a film minifest with “See How They Run” 5 p.m. Friday, October 14, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” 4:30 p.m. Sunday. 

“See How They Run” is a comedy mystery in the spirit of Agatha Christie, set in London’s West End in the 1950s. Plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. It stars Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan as detectives. The film is PG-13.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is an absurdist science fiction comedy, with a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a poll of 87 critics rated it at the top of films released so far in 2022.  Producers describe the film as “a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to finish her taxes.” It is rated R.

 

Tickets are $9 at Old Harbor Books, starting Oct. 10. Americorps and Sitka Fellows are admitted for free.

 

‘Baranov’ Topic

Of Presentation

The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will present “Alexander Baranov, The Man, The Myth,”  7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Mean Queen downstairs.

The presentation starts with what is actually known about Alexander Baranov (1747-1819) in Indigenous America, and traces the myth through embellishment in the 1880s,  wholesale invention in the 1920s, to how the myth persists to this day.

Childcare is Topic

Of Oct. 22 Event

The Sitka Health Summit is inviting families to a Childcare Awareness Fair 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 22,  at Blatchley Middle School.

Attendees can learn about Sitka’s childcare options, brainstorm solutions for childcare cost and availability, and connect to family resources.  An open gym, toddler gym, and activities are available for children. Snacks will be provided.

 

Read-a-Thon at

Blatchley School

Blatchley Middle School is holding a read-a-thon.

Parents will receive an email from the school with a link to their child’s online pledge page. Parents and family members can make a donation and then share the student’s  link with other friends and family for donations.

‘‘We are shooting for 100% participation, so no amount is too small,’’ the school said.

All proceeds raised will be split between the BMS library and classroom teachers.

BMS Triathlon

Set for Oct. 15

Blatchley Middle School’s annual triathlon is planned 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Motorists are being asked to use caution and watch for participants while driving on HPR between Blatchley Middle School and the Channel Club.

Land Trust Group

To Meet Oct. 24

The Sitka Community Land Trust will hold its next regular meeting 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at the Hames corporate office conference room at 208 Lake Street, Suite B.

Emblem Club

Meets Oct. 13

Sitka Emblem Club 142 will hold a business meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Elks Lodge.

A recap of the ASAEC workshop and discussion of upcoming events are planned. Visiting ASAEC president will present a grant. All members are welcome to attend. 

 

Human Rights Commission

Invites Sitka to Meeting

The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights invites Sitka residents to a public meeting 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Raven Conference Room in the Aspen Suites Hotel.

The commission is holding its  quarterly meeting here to coincide with Alaska Day events.

Public comment is scheduled for 1:30 pm. The meeting will be a hybrid of in-person attendance and video conferencing.

On Oct. 18, the commission will set up an outreach booth in the lobby of the Aspen Suites Hotel in conjunction with the Alaska Day parade. There will be information on the commission, guidance documents to assist businesses, and the opportunity to speak with commissioners and staff directly about discrimination issues.

The Alaska State Commission for Human Rights is an independent quasi-judicial state agency that aims to eliminate discrimination and support Alaskans when they face discrimination in the workplace, places of public accommodation, housing, credit and financing, and government practices.

It consists of seven volunteers who are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature for rotating five-year terms.

Members are Chairperson Zackary Gottshall (Anchorage), Vice Chairperson Mae Marsh (Fairbanks), William Craig (Sitka), Rebecca Carrillo (Juneau), Jessie Ruffridge (Soldotna), and Lonzo Henderson (Anchorage). The seventh seat is currently vacant.

Workshop Oct. 13

All are invited to join Sitka Sound Science Center Scientist in Residency Fellow and marine biologist Scotty Gabara for a free underwater photography workshop 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the science center.

Seminar on Tap

New Sitka Sound Science Center Scientist in Residency Fellow Scotty Gabara will lead a virtual seminar titled “How Glacial Melt is Affecting Nearshore Marine Ecosystems in Alaska,” in partnership with the UAS-Sitka Campus.

The talk will be over Zoom from 7  to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Gabara will describe how glacial melt changes intertidal seawater and how this affects intertidal communities including the ability of mussels to serve as intertidal foundation species.

Dancers Sought

For Public Event

Sitkans Can Dance!  is seeking  participants for a Nov. 5 performance at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

Organizers welcome dancers of all styles to the stage, including local dance groups. 

‘‘Here is your chance to dance for your friends and neighbors,’’ organizers said. ‘‘We welcome groups, duets, solos, etc. Anything you can think of, we’d like to see onstage.

Meeting on Tap

Those wanting to help the Sitka Homeless Coalition work-group move forward on the Jarvis Street cabin community are asked to attend a meeting at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, via Zoom.
