Public Library
Three free Sitka Doc Talks have been scheduled at Sitka Public Library. All will be held 6-7 p.m. and are open to the public.
The schedule is: Oct. 30, ‘‘Birth Plans and Labor Techniques,’’ Susan Ward, RN; Nov. 6, ‘‘Hearing Protection Across the Lifespan,’’ Megan Bennett, MS, CCC-SLP, and Suzan Hess, MS, CCC-SLP; and Nov. 13, ‘‘Diabetes Management and Traditional Alaskan Foods,’’ Kelly Lakin, RD, LD.
Flushing of Water
System on Tap
The city water department will be performing the annual flushing of the distribution mains starting Wednesday, Oct. 17, through Tuesday, Oct. 30.
The routine maintenance activity may cause localized low pressures and/or cloudy water for a short period of time.
‘‘Should your water become cloudy, simply run your cold water until it clears,’’ the city said. ‘‘This process does not create any health issues and is standard procedure.’’
The dates and locations to be included are as follows: Oct. 17, transmission line; Oct. 22, outer Lincoln Street; Oct. 23, Monastery Street and Verstovia Street neighborhoods; Oct. 24, downtown area; Oct. 24, Edgecumbe Drive, Halibut Point Road and side streets off HPR; Oct. 25, Edgecumbe Drive, HPR and side streets off HPR; Oct. 26, Sawmill Creek Road; Oct. 29, Sawmill Creek Road; and Oct. 30, Japonski Island.

A great crowd cheered the charming young stars on the Harrigan Centennial Hall stage Sunday night, Oct. 14, at the Alaska Day Festival Variety Show.
Alaska Day Festival organizers thanks to the performers, families and friends who braved not-so-pleasant weather.
Event coordinators Sharyn Ferrick and John Ferrick presented the Gymnastics Academy, Sitka Studio of Dance, Sitka Skippers, and Mt. Edgecumbe High School Chinese class. Steve Warren led the audience in traditional singing of the Alaska Flag Song.
For the bonnets feature, Sitka Elks Lodge provided the cash prizes and judges who named Iris Ramsey as the Youngest Wearer, Jenni Brett for Prettiest Hat, Helen Cunningham for Most Authentic, and Kim Lapchynski for Most Elegant.
Seattle Firefighters Pipe and Drums brought a rousing close.
AFN Convention
Coverage on GCI
This week, GCI’s Channel 907 will provide live coverage of the 2018 Alaska Federation of Natives Convention and will feature additional Alaska Native cultural programming, including AFN Quyana performances and coverage of the 2018 Elders and Youth Conference.
Channel 907 will air live coverage of the 52nd AFN Convention beginning Thursday, Oct. 18. Those who tune in can watch addresses by state and federal officials, including: Gov. Bill Walker, Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Sen. Dan Sullivan, Rep. Don Young, and others.

Parent-Teacher
Conferences Set
Student-led parent-teacher conferences will be 4-7 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30 at Blatchley Middle School.
Students will take parents to classrooms to meet their teachers and see their work. Appointments with teachers can be made 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, conferences by calling 747-8672.
PEAK Closure
The PEAK After School Enrichment Program will be closed on Oct. 18 in observance of Alaska Day and will re-open Oct. 19 for normal activities.

Hames Center will be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Alaska Day, Oct. 18.

Quilters to Meet
Ocean Wave Quilt Guild will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the United Methodist Church, 303 Kimsham Street.
The guild meets the first Tuesday of the month, September through June, for inspiration, friendship, creativity and support. Meetings are open to anyone and membership is not required.

Tickets on Sale
Raven Radio’s Stardust Ball tickets are on sale at Old Harbor Books for $35 per person. This year’s ball on Saturday, Oct. 27, features Nervis Rex from Anchorage.

Open House Set
Sitka Pioneers Home invites the community and visitors to its annual Alaska Day Open House, 2-4 p.m. Thursday.

The Sitka Gymnastics Booster Club will host a Halloween Carnival and a Parents Night Out Oct. 27 at the 207 Smith Street gym.

Memorial Service
For Alaska Day
At 11 a.m. Thursday at Sitka National Cemetery, U.S. Army Alaska Command Chaplain (LTC) Sun C. Lee will conduct a memorial service with representation by all military services.
Bugles and drums are provided by 9th Army Band, and Color Guard rifle salute by soldiers from U.S. Army Alaska Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage.
All veterans and survivors of those buried at the cemetery are encouraged to attend.

Pies and Quilts
Offered Thursday
Alaska Day Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will find local folks gathered at Sitka Lutheran Church, 224 Lincoln Street, in the fellowship hall to enjoy a sweet treat pie or other dessert while warming up, drying off if needed, and catching up with friends.
Proceeds from the annual pie sale are pledged this year to Lutheran Disaster Response, a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, to help with recovery from wildfires, hurricanes, and floods across the nation.
Upstairs on the main level, quilts and other handiwork will be offered for pre-priced sale or silent auction bid. Funds raised support the ongoing local and worldwide ministry of Sitka Lutheran Church.
