Takdeintaan to Meet
Takdeintaan will meet 6-9 p.m. tonight and 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the CHS Building, which is the former BOQ building, on the SEARHC campus.
The group will be preparing for the upcoming Koo’eek.
Sacred Harp Sing
Slated Oct. 27
All are invited to learn to sing four-part a capella harmony in an American tradition 3:30-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Pioneers Home Chapel.
Beginners and listeners are welcome. Singing is from the red Denson book, and loaner books are available. Singers visiting Sitka from throughout the Pacific Northwest will join local singers. For information call Sara at 747-2915.

Evening Event
The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society and Sitka Whalefest will present an evening of sea songs and chanteys by Don Sineti 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Beak Restaurant.

Tribal Elders
To be Honored
On Nov. 26
Sitka Tribe of Alaska will host its third annual Honoring Tribal Elders Luncheon and legal clinic 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Centennial Hall.
The event will begin with a welcome and blessing of the food, followed by a Tribal Council swearing-in ceremony at noon. The luncheon, hosted by the social services department, is noon-2 p.m.
The STA legal department will hold a legal clinic from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Attorneys will assist with simple wills, real estate allotments and probate questions, advance health care directives and durable powers of attorney.

Elders are being encouraged to take their regalia for portrait photos.
Gift cards will be presented to enrolled elders, ages 65 and older.
Film Screening
At Science Center
Sitka Sound Science Center will host a behind-the-scenes event 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, to screen a short film by Anne Beaudreau, associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Her film “Knowing Fish” celebrates the importance of fishing in Alaska’s coastal communities, including scenes in Sitka, and tells the story of fishermen and scientists who are bringing their world views together in new ways, the science center said.
The film will be followed by a discussion about changes in rockfish populations with Jesse Gordo, a master of science student at the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Gordo is working with Anne Beaudreau to expand on the work started in the film.
The program is for adults, free to participate, and light refreshments will be provided.
Chamber to Meet
Joe D’Arienzo and Rebecca Poulson of Sitka Maritime Heritage Society, and Robin Sherman of Sitka Legacy Foundation, will speak at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.
Sherman will announce the grant recipients for 2019. D’Arienzo and Poulson will provide an update on the organization and activities.
Feeding Grounds
Banquet Slated
The Sitka WhaleFest Feeding Grounds Banquet at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, will feature keynote speaker Jackie Hildering, who will present “Ocean Wonders.”
‘‘Join us for a night of mingling with our symposium speakers and enjoying local food catered by Our Town Catering,’’ organizers said.
New this year we will be assigning guests to tables. Tickets are $70 and include a drink, appetizers, banquet dinner and presentation, and can be purchased at sitkawhalefest.org.
Family Concert

Folksinger, songwriter and shanty-man Don Sineti is back for the Sitka WhaleFest Family Concert 4:15-5 p.m. Nov. 3 at Centennial Hall.
Sineti is an award-winning marine mammal illustrator and author. With a booming voice and a hearty laugh, he shares his music, his art, and his unrestrained love for whales, with audiences of all ages.

Maritime Grind
Slated Nov. 1
The marine-themed Maritime Grind, an evening of laughter, song, dance and a dessert contest, will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at Centennial Hall.
The family event coordinated by the Monthly Grind crew features local talent. It is co-hosted by the Greater Sitka Arts Council and Sitka WhaleFest. Tickets are $5 at sitkawhalefest.org or at Old Harbor Books.

All are invited to attend the WhaleFest market and café to get a jump on holiday shopping and learn about local non-profits.
Silent auction items will be available for bidding during market hours, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily Nov. 1-3.
WhaleFest Sets
Fun Run Nov. 2
Join the crowd rain or shine, and watch for whales along the course on Saturday, Nov. 2, for the WhaleFest Fun Run.
The race starts at 10 a.m. from Whale Park. Participants can choose from a 2-mile walk, 5K or 10K for $5. The first 125 to sign up will receive a free run shirt.
Through sponsorship by SEARHC, medals will be awarded for the first, second and third place in the 5K and 10K men’s and women’s divisions, and a masters (10K only).
Registration can be completed ahead of time online at www.sitkawhalefest.org, 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, at Centennial Hall, or 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Whale Park.
Proceeds benefit the Sitka Sound Science Center and Sitka WhaleFest.
Tribal Council
Elections Nov. 12
Sitka Tribe of Alaska will hold its Tribal Council election 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.
Six are running for four seats. They include Harvey Kitka, Gary Olson, Martha Moses, Blossom Twitchell, Lesa Way and Lawrence ‘‘Woody’’ Woodmark.
