About Activities

On the Tongass

Anyone wanting information about activities occurring on Tongass National Forest lands, or wishing to share recommendations and concerns about Tongass projects, have multiple options for being involved in the management of their public lands.

The Tongass project website (https://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/tongass/landmanagement/projects) lists all forest projects active, on hold, or cancelled, with links to more information.

The Schedule of Proposed Actions, SOPA, (https://www.fs.fed.us/sopa/forest-level.php?111005) is a quarterly update on projects being considered or recently selected for implementation by the USDA Forest Service. The list includes important dates and contact information for each project. The SOPA is also available via email. Sign up here: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/USDAFS/subscriber/new?topic_id=111005_AnnMonReport.

The Tongass also has an electronic mailing list for in-depth information, which allows individuals to choose specific projects, areas, or categories, to receive emails for. Learn more about and sign up for the forest mailing list at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/tongass/workingtogether/?cid=fseprd536491.

Follow the Tongass National Forest (@TongassNF) on Facebook and Twitter to receive daily updates, pictures, videos and more information.

Cabin Community

Kickoff on Oct. 13

Those wanting to join the effort to end homelessness in Sitka are invited to the COVID-safe launch of a campaign to build cabins for our neighbors without housing 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, under the Crescent Harbor shelter.

The Sitka Health Summit selected the project as one of its goals for the wellness of the community and will support the newly formed Cabin Community Committee, a working group of the Sitka Homeless Coalition.

Individuals can stop by Crescent Harbor to learn more about the construction proposal and meet others who are interested in volunteering to help their neighbors.

‘‘Let’s work together to create a healthier and safer community where all can thrive,’’ organizers said.
