Old Boat Destroyed In Fire

A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a derelict fiberglass boat parked on a Sawmill Creek Road storage lot Sunday afternoon, the fire department said.
Another boat parked nearby was damaged in the fire, officials said. The lot at 1209 Sawmill Creed Road is owned by Romar Holdings.
Two fire trucks, a dozen firefighters and one ambulance were dispatched after the 911 call came in at 2:04 p.m. Arriving at the scene, firefighters saw the 24-foot fiberglass vessel “fully involved” in a fire emitting thick black smoke. It took about 15 minutes to put out the fire, using foam and water, SFD Chief Dave Miller said.
Neither the police nor fire departments had information on the boat owner by press time today, and Miller said estimating damage is difficult because the boats appeared to be derelict in the first place.
“I wouldn’t know where to start,” he said.
He said the department does not plan to investigate at this time.
“If we have this happen again, we’ll start looking into it but right now it’s just a rare thing that happened,” the chief said.
