Land line phones were inoperable at some Sitka locations today following a GCI outage.
GCI cellular service was not affected, a company employee said this morning.
Technicians are working to fix the problem that shut down some phones in Sitka, the employee said.
“Outages happen.... and we get them back up and running in a timely manner,” the employee said, without giving an estimate of when the outage would end. At press time, service was still out.
In a separate interview this afternoon, another GCI employee told the Sentinel repairs are still underway, but “there is no specific timeframe yet for the restoration.”
Downtown businesses – including the Yellow Jersey Bike Shop, Old Harbor Books, Russell’s and the Sentinel – said their phones were not working.
Yellow Jersey staff said their phone would ring, but only a busy signal could be heard. The Edward Jones office in the Shee Atika building sent an email advising clients that the office would be closed today because of the phone outage.
Phones were not working at Old Harbor Books, but all was OK next door at the Back Door Cafe, where the phone is on an internet hookup.
