Sitka police say they have identified suspects in a burglary and an attempted break-in that occurred last week on Sawmill Creek Road.
“We have reason to believe both of these cases are solvable,” Police Lt. Lance Ewers said.
The attempted burglary was the early morning of Monday, Dec. 31, when a man tried to break into a locked home in the 1300 block of Sawmill Creek Road. He was caught and detained by the resident, who was at home at the time. The suspect was able to wiggle out of his hoodie and escape, but he has been identified, Ewers said.
The burglary was Jan. 3 at a store in the Sawmill Creek Plaza, in which a cash box containing an undisclosed amount of cash was taken, in addition to more than $1,000 worth of merchandise, including expensive oils, Ewers said. The security video from a nearby business shows the suspect entering the building, he said. The business manager discovered the burglary the following morning and reported it to police.
The cases are not related, but both suspects “are known drug users,” Ewers said. He said the investigations are ongoing.
