The Ocean Wave Quilters know their creations aren’t just something to keep you warm.
“All of the quilts are works of art,” said Megan Pasternak, an Ocean Wave quilter who, with Karen Boyer, organized this year’s scholarship fundraiser. “Even though they’re utilitarian, things can be beautiful too.”
The Ocean Wave Quilt Guild will hold its annual mini quilt scholarship auction 7 p.m. tonight at Harrigan Centennial Hall.
The free event features two silent auctions plus an outcry auction for other quilt and sewing items.
Masks are required.
The fundraiser provides scholarships for high school seniors to continue their education, and for a student of any age to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. The event has been held each year since 2011, providing tens of thousands of dollars in financial help to Mt. Edgecumbe, Pacific High and Sitka High school kids.
The guild last held a live in-person auction in 2020, then carried on the tradition during the pandemic in 2021 with an online event. But the members are happy to be back in person for tonight’s fundraiser.
“Pictures don’t do these quilts justice – they have to be seen in person to be truly appreciated,” commented Sarah Jordan, president of the guild.
Sweet and savory snacks will be offered.
The auction featuring 21 mini quilts runs from 7:25 to 7:35 p.m.
A silent auction runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features a number of items, including vintage linens, a wrought-iron quilt rack, tools and notions, a tea set with a caddy, a framed quilt and quilt kits, among other items.
The outcry auction runs from 7:35 p.m. and includes fabric and bundles of fabric, vintage quilts, Hawaiian fabric, linens, kits and other items.
Cash, credit cards and checks will be accepted. All proceeds go toward scholarships awarded to Sitka, Mt. Edgecumbe and Pacific high school seniors and Sitka Fine Arts Camp.
