Open House at

Sitka Job Center

In recognition of September being Workforce Development Month, the Sitka Job Center will host an open house all day Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 12  and 13, at 304 Lake Street, Room 101.

Job seekers, employers and partners are invited to meet the staff and learn about the Job Center services.

Job seekers can see who is hiring and learn about state jobs, funding for training, apprenticeship opportunities and other resources.

Employers can highlight their business and open positions. Interviews are available for employers to speak to staff about any business need.

Community partners can meet staff, learn about what the Job Center offers.

ANS Sets Meeting;

Nominations Sought

Alaska Native Sisterhood, Camp 4, will meet 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the ANB Founders Hall.

It will be the third and final round of nominations for 2022-23 officers. Nominees must be paid-up members in good standing. Dues can be paid at the meeting and are $12 a year, and $2 for ages newborn through 16 years.

MEHS to Update

Master Plan; Sets

Public Forum

Mt. Edgecumbe High School and the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development are initiating a planning effort to update the school’s long-range master plan.

As the initial step, the community, stakeholders, staff, students and families are invited to attend a public meeting to provide visioning input to help guide the project. A public forum will be hosted 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, remotely through Zoom.

The master plan will review existing conditions and opportunities, and make recommendations for educational programming, facilities and infrastructure, land use, and projected needs to meet the school’s mission.

Work includes understanding future educational program needs and use, identification of deferred maintenance, recommendations for capital renewal and new construction, and establishing community partnerships.

Juneau Foundation

Gives to Nonprofits

The Juneau Community Foundation’s Douglas-Dornan Foundation Fund has announced the distribution of $28,646 in grants to 13 nonprofit organizations in Southeast Alaska.

Since 1994, the fund has distributed $556,425 to organizations that benefit and enhance the health, education, and welfare of individuals in Southeast Alaska.

Grants have been issued to the following organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters, $2,250; Brave Heart Volunteers, $2,225; Cancer Connection, $1,500; Catholic Community Service, $1,750; Juneau Nordic Ski Club, $1,525; Juneau Youth Sailing Inc., $3,000; Lynn Canal Adventures, $3,500; Perseverance Theatre, $1,000; Southeast Alaska Foodbank,  $2,500; Southeast Alaska Independent Living Inc., $3,500; Southeast Regional Resource Center, $1,746; Takshanuk Watershed Council, $1,200; and the Wrangell High School (BASE), $2,950.

The Douglas-Dornan Foundation Fund was established in 1993 in memory of Brian Douglas and Wythe Dornan who were active members of the Juneau community.

Signups Open for

For Sitka Skippers

Registration is open for new jumpers to join the Sitka Skippers. Kids ages 5 and up can sign up for the available 20 spaces.

Weekly 4:30-6 p.m. Monday practices start Sept. 19 at the Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School gym.

Grab & Go Craft

Program at Library

Sitka Public Library will offer a Grab & Go bag program in September, which will include free crafts for preschoolers.

Bags will be ready on Saturdays, Sept 10, 17 and 24, and participants can pick them up anytime during the week. This program is for children ages 3 to 5 years. Registration is required and space is limited. Call 747 4020 to register or e-mail Maite at maite.lorente@cityofsitka.org. 

 

Ballot Machine

Accuracy Tested

At 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, the City and Borough of Sitka will have logic and accuracy testing on the automatic tabulating equipment to be used for counting ballots for the Oct. 4 municipal election.

Testing will be at Harrigan Centennial Hall, 330 Harbor Drive, in meeting room 5. It is open to the public.

 

Women’s Pistol

League to Start

The Sitka Sportsman’s Association is hosting a Women’s Pistol League this fall.

‘‘Participants will range from beginners to accomplished shooters, so come on out and join this fun group of women,’’ the organization said.

Registration, range orientation and a practice session will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7.

The league will meet 6 p.m. Sundays  starting Sept. 11 and will run for 10 weeks. The Sitka Sportsman’s Association indoor pistol range is located at 5211 Halibut Point Road (just before the ferry terminal).

Participation fees are $50. Shooters must also be a current member of the Association ($50/year) and have a valid Shooter’s Insurance Card ($50/year).  

Those who mention they are participating in the Women’s Pistol League will  receive a 10% discount on pistols, optics, parts, shooting accessories and safety gear at Orion’s Sporting Goods and Guns of Alaska, the Sportsman’s Association said.

Tourism Impacts

A team of student researchers from the Pardee RAND Graduate School is assisting the Sitka Sound Science Center and the broader community in understanding how tourism is impacting individuals and the community of Sitka.

Residents can participate in a brief and anonymous survey that should not take more than 10 minutes to complete, the science center said.

Taste of France

To Include Music

Sitka Fine Arts Camp will present an evening of French food and music 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.

The evening will feature a tasting menu of savory and sweet crepes by French chef Olivier Pheulpin and music by vocalist Karen Neal and pianist Susan Reed.

Broadband Service

Test Requested

The FCC is in the process of updating its current broadband maps with more detailed and precise information on the availability of fixed and mobile broadband services.

The Broadband Data Collection program will give the FCC, industry, state, local and Tribal government entities, and consumers the tools they need to improve the accuracy of existing maps, said Garry White of Sitka Economic Development Association.

‘‘We need your help to strengthen Sitka’s Broadband Service,’’ White said.

Eating Disorders

Program Listed

The Alaska Eating Disorders Alliance will host internationally known researcher, clinician, author and trainer Dr. Laura Hill Sept. 19-23.

She will offer free provider training as well as a skills training for individuals who are supporting loved ones with eating disorders using a new model of treatment that takes into consideration the most recent findings about the neurobiological, brain-based commonalities amongst those at risk for eating disorders.Free provider trainings will be available noon-1 p.m. Sept. 23 at SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center or online.

Free skills training for those supporting loved ones with eating disorders are available online Sept. 19-22.

Babies and Books

Program Listed 

Sitka Babies and Books and Sitka Public Library will offer a curbside program 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the library.

Call 747-4020 to register a child for the program and reserve a book and bag with supplies. This month’s theme is “sea creatures,” and participants will make their own stuffed animal. 

The story art program is designed for children ages 1 to 4 to spark imagination, creativity and lifelong connections with books.

Participants will receive a bag with a free book and supplies to work on a project focused on the book’s theme. The program is made possible by a grant from Sitka Legacy Foundation, an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation. For information contact Maite at 747-4022.

Panel to Meet

The Human Services and Transportation Advisory Committee will meet 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Centennial Hall, in the Rose Room.

Agenda items include: to consider transportation needs of clients of Sitka’s human and social services agencies, and to recommend priorities among possible grant applications to address those needs.

BHV Buoy, Art

Auction Slated

Brave Heart Volunteers will have an online buoy and art auction Aug. 23-30. Buoys are decorating downtown this summer and the auction will raise funds to continue the work of BHV.

4-H Plans Wild

Edibles Series

The fall wild edibles series for all ages is planned 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Individuals can learn about wild edibles through identifying, harvesting and processing with 4-H’s Alaska Way of Life club. All ages are invited to learn more about local mushroom, bog, berry and salmon species.
