Dies in Oregon

Nona Mae Riste, Sitka resident of 55 years, passed away peacefully in Dayton, Oregon, at age 82 on April 21, 2022, surrounded by family. Per her request, no service will to be held.

Closure Listed

Voting Details

For Oct. 4

The City and Borough of Sitka is offering guidelines for voting in the regular municipal election on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Those eligible can vote by one of the following methods:

–Absentee voting by mail: Voters may submit an application to receive a ballot by mail. Ballots will be mailed mid-September and must be returned to the municipal clerk’s office before 5 p.m. on Oct. 4 or be postmarked by Oct. 4. Applications to vote by mail must be received by the Municipal Clerk’s Office no later than Sept. 27.

–Advanced/absentee voting in-person: Voters may vote an early in-person ballot weekdays 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 19-Oct. 3 at Centennial Hall.  

–Voting by fax: Voters may submit an application to vote by electronic transmission. Voted ballots by electronic transmission must be submitted according to the clerk’s instructions and received no later than 8 p.m. on Election Day.

–Voting by personal representative: Voters who are unable to vote in person due to age, serious illness, or disability, may have a personal representative pick up a ballot beginning Sept. 19. Contact the clerk’s office for information.

–Election Day in person: Voters may vote in person on Election Day at their respective precinct at Centennial Hall. Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

A wheelchair accessible booth and an ADA compliant voting apparatus are available during absentee voting and at each precinct on Election Day.

Community Land

Trust Set to Meet

The Sitka Community Land Trust will meet 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26,  in person at the Hames corporate office conference room at 208 Lake Street, Suite B.

The public is invited. The SCLT is a non-profit organization that relies on community support and participation. For information, contact Mim McConnell at 907-738-2888. 

 

Alaska Day Panel

Meets Sept. 13

The Alaska Day Festival Committee will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Centennial Hall, Room 7, to finalize the festival schedule of events.

Those having an event to place on our schedule of events contact Marsha Lyons at 907-738-6490 or come to the meeting.  The Alaska Day Festival committee is in need of volunteers, including for Ninth Infantry soldiers, Russian sailors, and airport greeters. Contact Ted Allio at 907-752-0556.

 

Shipyard Tours,

Event Sept. 17

Members of the GPIP board will give tours and answer questions about Proposition 2, the Sitka Community Shipyard, 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at 4500 Sawmill Creek Rd (the old bottling company).

Health Networking

Meeting Sept. 22

The Sitka Health Summit Coalition’s monthly Wooch.een (together in Tlingit) health networking and learning meeting will be held virtually noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, via Zoom.

The purpose of the meeting is to spark partnerships and to promote cross sector collaboration, learning and networking to improve the well-being in Sitka.
