At SJ Museum
The Sheldon Jackson Museum will observe the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on Saturday, Sept. 21, with free admission.
Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket, which provides free admission for two people.

Winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Tuesday through Saturday, except holidays. Winter admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors. Visitors 18 and younger are admitted free of charge. Assistance is available for visitors with special needs. Contact the museum for information at 747-8981.
Art Activity
At SJ Museum
Youths are invited to the Sheldon Jackson Museum for an At Saxan art activity 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
The activity will be to make a Tlingit killer whale paper craft. Admission will be waived. To register a child, ages 6-10, for the program, or for more information, call 747-8981.
At Saxan traditionally happens one Saturday of the month in the fall, winter and spring and is family-friendly, free of charge, and sponsored by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum.
Children make a craft or work of art and learn about Alaska Native cultures and peoples. Frequently, At Saxan participants look for specific kinds of artifacts in the gallery.
SJ Architecture
History Presented
James Poulson will present “The Architecture of the Sheldon Jackson Campus, from Phrenology to Academic Eclecticism” 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Laundry Building/Power House on the Sheldon Jackson School National Historic Landmark.
Poulson, who has a master of design studies in historic preservation at Boston Architectural College, will talk about the schools, the architects and trends behind the architecture of the Sheldon Jackson School National Historic Landmark, including the connection between the Sheldon Jackson Museum and Victorian phrenologist Orson Squire Fowler.
The Laundry Building is across College Drive from the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Additional parking is available at the Hames Center. The talk is sponsored by the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, as part of historic preservation projects on the Laundry Building and on Fraser Hall next door. Preservation work has been funded in part by Historic Preservation Fund Certified Local Government grants. For more information call 738-7448.

To Meet Sunday
Sitka Kaagwaantaan will meet 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, to teach history, cultural values and ceremony, and to plan fundraisers for the dancers who want to sign up to go to Celebration in the spring.

Preservation Event
Slated Sept. 20
What I Did This Summer, a celebration of art, music and historic preservation, will be held 5-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the Power House/Laundry Building on the Sheldon Jackson School National Historic Landmark.
The Laundry Building is across from the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Additional parking is available at Hames Center.
The event includes a show of art and objects by Sitkans on the theme of “What I Did This Summer,” tours of historic preservation work on the Laundry Building and on Fraser Hall (next door), live music and refreshments.
The event is sponsored by the Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. For more information call 738-7448.

Call for Entries
Sitkans are invited to submit an artwork or object for the art show “What I Did This Summer” to be held 5-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, on the SJ Campus.
The object or artwork should be accompanied by a card telling briefly how it represents a special experience from this summer, organizers said. Entries could be a traditional artwork such as a painting or photograph, or could be an object such as a pair of running shoes, boat parts, a seashell or a jar of jam.
Write or type a few sentences about the work or object for display and drop off the entry (one per person) between 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, or before noon on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Laundry Building/Power House on the SJ Campus (across from the SJ Museum).
Pickup will be right after the event or by arrangement. The event is sponsored by the Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. For information call 738-7448.
Boathouse Repair
Volunteers Sought
All are invited to help repair a piece of Sitka’s history at the Sitka Maritime Heritage Society’s next work party 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 14.

Moose Convention
Volunteers Sought
The Alaska/Hawaii Moose Association 74th Annual Convention will be held in Sitka Sept. 26-28.
All local members are invited to attend informational sessions and to catch up with friends.
The Moose also is looking for volunteers to help with various tasks throughout the convention. Donations of food for the welcome potluck on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and baked goods for meetings also are needed.

Draft on Review
The draft of the Five-Year Sitka Public Transit-Human Services Transportation Coordinated Plan, July 2020 to June 2025, is available for public comment.
The draft is posted online at http://ridesitka.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/SitkaPublicTransitHumanServicesTransportationCoordinatedPlan202525.pdf. Hard copies are available for review at the Center for Community office at 700-B Katlian Street and at the Sitka Tribe of Alaska Transportation Department, 465 Katlian Street, second floor. People can request a copy by email from Connie Sipe at csipe@cfc.org.
The plan will be up for adoption by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Sheet’ká Kwáan Naa Kahídi. Public comment also will be taken.
All submitted public comment must be in hand by Monday, Sept. 16, and can be sent by email to csipe@cfc.org or gerry.hope@sitkatribe-nsn.gov, or submitted by phone to 966-4232. Those comments received by Sept. 16 will be presented to the STA Tribal Council meeting before the adoption of the plan.
