Free at Hames
The Hames Center is offering a free Zumba class 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The class is open to both Hames members and non-members.
Zumba classes are offered regularly 5:30-6:30 p.m. Fridays and 4-5 p.m. Sundays, and are taught by Kate DesRosiers.

The Hames Center’s fall schedule begins Sept. 16. Sunday hours of 1-5 p.m. will resume.

National Merit
Semifinalists
Two Sitka students, Abigail R. Fitzgibbon and Isabella M. Laybourn, have been named National Merit Scholarship Corporation semifinalists.
Today officials announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Abigail attends Sitka High and Isabella is homeschooled.
The academically talented high school seniors can continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Market Saturday
The final Sitka Farmers Market of the season is scheduled 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the ANB Founders Hall.
Storytelling Grind
Slated for Oct. 6
The Sitka Monthly Grind announces the Quest: Looking for Truth, Treasures and Talent, Storytelling Grind to be held 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The theme is ‘‘Quest, Story Telling,’’ produced by Ellen Frankenstein in a variety of formats.
As always, the philosophy of the Monthly Grind is affordable, non-political and family entertainment. Tickets must be purchased in advance at Old Harbor Books. The cost is $5 for adults, $1 for children under 12, or free with a plate of homemade desserts.
Those taking a plate of dessert will have their ticket price reimbursed at the door. Tickets must be purchased in advance at Old Harbor Books.

Night Shelter
Meeting Set
A meeting for the men’s winter night shelter will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Centennial Hall in room 2.
Those attending will be updated on the shelter location search and have opportunity to voice thoughts and suggestions, and have questions answered.

Photo Contest
Alaska commercial fishermen, family and friends of fishermen, representing all commercial species, regions and gear types, are being called to submit a photograph showing their passion for fishing in Alaska through the Alaska Seafood Commercial Fishing Photo Contest, hosted by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.
Photos must be submitted online at https://photocontest.alaskaseafood.org/ through Sept. 30.
‘‘Feel free to pose for a new photo or submit a shot captured this season or seasons prior,’’ ASMI said. ‘‘We’re looking for images that show families working hard together; mentors passing along the craft of fishing down through generations; boats and wildlife against majestic Alaska landscapes; iconic high-quality fishing and handling at its best; quiet moments between sets; celebratory action shots of beautiful fish coming over the rail; or anything else that enhances the image and story of Alaska seafood for audiences around the globe.’’

Contest categories are: Life on the Boat, Best Fish, Action, Family, Scenic and Best Boat.

Winners for each category can win up to $150 cash, an Alaska Seafood dry duffle bag with swag, and the opportunity to see their photos used in promoting wild Alaska seafood worldwide. Winners will be announced in early October during National Seafood Month.
Open House at
PAC Thursday
The Sitka Performing Arts Center will host an open house event 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13. Included will be refreshments in the lobby, tours of backstage, information on this season’s performances, and opportunities to sign up to volunteer as ushers, technicians and costume creators for live events.
‘‘It is a great opportunity to explore new sides of the Performing Arts Center and meet people excited about the arts in our community,’’ organizers said.
