A celebration of life for Neil James Huff, who passed away peacefully on Aug. 29 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, will be 3-6 p.m. Sept. 27 under the main shelter at Halibut Point Recreation Area.

Lecture Series
Presenters Sought
Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is seeking proposals for the Winter Lecture/Culture Share Series to be held on Zoom between late November and mid-March.
Speakers are invited to propose to give a 30-45 minute Zoom presentation in one of six categories:
1) Talk on an art form or culture or relevant topic;
2) Traditional story-telling – share a traditional story or several stories;
3) Provide an art-making demonstration;
4) Teach a traditional dance/song;
5) Share a traditional Alaska Native recipe and give a cooking demonstration to show how to make the dish;
6) Give a presentation on a topic connected to Alaska Native cultures or interests researched for higher education purposes, publications, professional interest, or for your work for tribes, villages or corporations.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 5.
The Zoom events will be open to the public, recorded and then placed on the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum YouTube Channel. They may also be posted to Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum Facebook page and social media pages.
Speakers will need to have Internet and sufficient bandwidth from their place of Zooming and computer access. At the end of each event, the speaker will give a short question-and-answer event with event attendees. If selected, speakers will need to provide a brief bio and picture to help advertise the event. Speakers will be given a $100 honorarium from the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum for their participation. A test run Zoom to ensure sufficient connection quality will be done in advance of the event.

Any Deer Season
Open to Dec. 31
Hunters are reminded the season for does and bucks (any deer) is open and runs through Sept. 15 in Game Management Unit 4.
Deer populations in Unit 4 have likely exceeded carrying capacity in some watersheds, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game said. Hunters are being encouraged to include does in their Unit 4 harvest. Doe harvest helps reduce over-utilization of winter habitat, Fish and Game said.

Recovery Month
Walk Set Sept. 26
Sitka Counseling will host its second annual Walk for Recovery 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. The walk will begin at Harrigan Centennial Hall, go over the bridge and back to the hall.
It is a socially distanced event and wearing masks is required. Free T-shirts will be provided until gone. A camera will be set for participants who want to share thoughts on recovery. All are invited to participate to show support for those in recovery.
