No-Fishing Zone

Posted at SSSC

The Sitka Sound Science Center is welcoming individuals to fish for salmon from Sage beach; however, for the safety of the organization and the salmon being reared, fishing from the rocks on science center property is prohibited.

The center asks that anglers not go beyond the gates to fish and to respect the ‘‘no trespassing’’ signs.

For Youth Panel

The Sitka Youth Leadership Committee, a youth-led organization dedicated to promoting equity, diversity, and healthy relationships, will reconvene this month for the school year.

SYLC is recruiting applicants from all three of Sitka’s high schools who wish to promote equity and diversity across Sitka through education on healthy relationships, social media initiatives, and campaigns on power, privilege, and systems of oppression.

SYLC meets weekly, 6:15-7:45 p.m. Wednesdays, as well as once a month on the weekends for three-hour workshops. SYLC may meet in person or on Zoom depending on COVID-19 community risk level, organizers said.

‘‘To ensure SYLC is representative of our community, we strive to include a diversity of voices in our group and aim for a balance of students from all the high schools in Sitka as well as the middle school,’’ SYLC said. ‘‘We welcome any applicants who are passionate about improving Sitka’s community and being leaders, and reserve space for local Sitkans, specifically tribal citizens who are interested in this opportunity.’’

Brave Heart

Earns Pandemic

Recovery Grant

Brave Heart Volunteers has received a $7,500 grant from Royal Caribbean Group and the Alaska Travel Industry Association Foundation to help offset operational expenses.

The funds have allowed BHV to cover yearly insurance costs and an email marketing subscription, which strengthens communications with donors, volunteers, and care receivers.

“The funding from this grant truly makes a significant difference to BHV and helps us to continue helping a highly vulnerable sector of our community,” said Executive Director Angie DelMoral. “Since the pandemic, BHV has seen a 40% decrease in donations and we are still limited in our ability to fundraise in COVID-safe ways, so we are deeply grateful to the RCG and ATIA for their generous support of our ongoing mission to help Sitkans who suffer from grief, loneliness, chronic illness, or are nearing the end of life.”

Other Sitka recipients are the Alaska Raptor Center ($25,000), Sitka Bike and Hike ($7,500), and Allen Marine Tours ($40,000).

Royal Caribbean Group and the Alaska Travel Industry Association Foundation have partnered to assist more than 65 Alaska tourism businesses and community organizations in their pandemic recoveries.
