Power, Privilege
Symposium Set
The 5th Annual Power & Privilege Symposium will be held virtually Nov. 10. Keynote speakers will be Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu and Haley Moss.
Wong-Kalu is a Native Hawaiian māhū – a traditional third-gendered person who “occupies a place in the middle.” As a modern transgender woman, Wong-Kalu is an activist, kumu hula (hula teacher), filmmaker, and community leader.
Haley Moss was diagnosed with autism at age 3 and made international headlines for becoming the first documented openly autistic attorney admitted to the Florida Bar. Moss is an attorney, author, artist and autism advocate.
The call for proposals will begin on Sept. 28. Individuals should consider submitting a proposal on a topic of their choosing. It may be pre-recorded.
The symposium is scheduled as a regular part of the University of Alaska Southeast’s fall calendar; most classes do not meet on the scheduled day to allow broad participation by students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Parsly Awarded
CG Scholarship
Michael Parsly of Sitka, son of U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Lloyd Parsly II, has been awarded a Coast Guard Foundation Scholarship.
The non-profit organization committed to strengthening the Coast Guard community and service by supporting members and families, announced today that it awarded 167 scholarships this year, totaling $503,000 in support.
The Coast Guard Foundation Scholarships benefit the children of enlisted men and women who are serving or have served in the U.S. Coast Guard, whether active duty, reserve, retired or deceased.

Meets Thursday
Sitka Emblem Club 142 will meet 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Elks Lodge.

STA Scholarship
Deadline Near
The next Sitka Tribe of Alaska Higher Education scholarship deadline is by close of business on Oct. 1.
Tribal citizens seeking a scholarship for the remainder of this academic year are being encouraged to apply.

Fish and Chips
Benefit Sunday
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a halibut fish and chip, clam chowder, fried bread and baked goods sale noon Sunday at the Legion Hall.
Donations are being accepted. Proceeds will go to Robert Nielsen to help with expenses following a house fire and the loss of his partner, Betty Jo Edenshaw.
Clothing is needed for the occupants of the home – male pants size 38-34 and extra large shirts and jackets; and female pants size 10 and size large shirts. They can be dropped off at the Legion Hall.
Public Lands Day
Event at SNHP
Sitka National Historical Park will join the nationwide celebration National Public Lands Day with a park/beach cleanup event 12:30-3:30 p.m. Sept. 26.
Trash bags and gloves will be provided. They can be picked up at the cleanup station outside the park visitor center at any time after 12:30 p.m. Trash collected will need to be taken back to the station by 3:30 p.m.
‘‘Please wear boots/shoes suitable for walking in the park and on the beach and follow physical distancing guidelines while participating in this event,’’ the park said.
A short ranger-led program about marine debris will be offered at 2 p.m.

Swap Sept. 26
The Sitka Sportsman’s Association is having its Gun and Outdoor Gear Swap Saturday, Sept. 26, at 5211 Halibut Point Road. Doors open for buyers and browsers at 9 a.m. and ending around 1 p.m.
Sellers’ tables rent for $10 for members and $20 for non-members. Both individuals and businesses can sell at the event. Only sellers may arrive at 8 a.m. to set up. Sellers must reserve a table by contacting Chad at 623-0908 or email premiertrainingak@gmail.com.
Census Signup
Deadline Sept. 30
The deadline for completing the 2020 Census is Sept. 30, and as of Aug. 20, Sitka’s response rate is 58.3%, a U.S. Census press release says.
The Census determines how more than $3.2 billion each year is spent on public services in Alaska from hospitals, airports, and schools, to public health, public safety, and family benefits. Going uncounted means missing out on critical support for Sitka, the release said.
All households who do not complete their 2020 Census that was mailed or delivered to the household door will be visited by a census taker. Households are encouraged to complete their 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mailing back the census form as soon as possible to decrease the number of census takers needed to go.

UAS Lecture Series
Continues Friday
The annual UAS fall lecture series continues 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, with a virtual presentation by Zachary Brown, executive director of Inian Islands Institute, “The True Nature of the Climate Crisis.”
This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fall Lecture Series events will be offered virtually using Zoom. Each talk has a free registration link listed below, and also available on the UAS Juneau campus calendar uas.alaska.edu/calendar. After completing the registration, a confirmation email is sent with information on how to join the meeting.
