Hames Center

Sets New Hours

Hames Center’s winter hours begin Sunday, Sept. 8, and will be 5:30-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.

The Saturday schedule will include a gentle pilates class at 9 a.m. and power pilates at 10:15 a.m.

On Sunday, classes include zumba at 3 p.m. and spin at 4 p.m.

Adult Basketball

Registration Set

Adult Basketball League teams and players can register online at www.hamescenterleagues.org.

 

Teams must be registered and paid by Sept. 27. League season will run Oct. 7-mid-December. Divisions include Upper, Recreational, Masters 42+, and Women’s. It is open to ages 16 and older. For information email rec@hamescenter.org or call Hames Center, 747-5080. 

 

Diabetes Tips at

Sept. 21 Class

Those living with type 2 diabetes can learn healthy tips to manage symptoms through SEARHC’s free diabetes self-management classes.

Subjects will include: how to deal with pain, fatigue, and emotional distress; exercises for strength and endurance; and healthy eating and taking medications.

The group meets 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturdays, Sept. 21-Oct. 26 at the Mountainside Family Clinic Classroom 209 Moller Avenue.

Running of Boots

Set for Sept. 28

The 25th annual Running of the Boots family friendly costumed fun run fundraiser will be Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at the tent by Totem Square park.

Registration opens at 10:30 a.m., and the race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., with costume judging about 11 a.m. The entry free is $10 for individuals, or $30 for families. The event raises funds for the Sitka Local Foods Network and Youth Advocates of Sitka, and is part of the Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce’s Season’s-End Celebration.

The event includes prizes, live music, a Sitka Local Foods Network farm stand with locally grown produce and Alaska Grown products, and the Smoothie truck. 

 

Fiber Friends

Meet Sept. 21

Fiber Friends will meet noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Gus Adams room of the Sitka Public Library.

Those who work with fibers are welcome to attend, and to take items to show and ideas to share.

This will be Alice Johnstone’s last meeting before she moves to California.

 

Water Aerobics

Class to Run

NYC Pianist

Set to Perform

Sitka Fine Arts Camp will present ‘‘A Night of Avant-garde Piano’’ 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

New York City-based pianist Robert Fleitz will lead a journey through the world of modern and experimental music. Tickets are $20 general and $15 for youths, on sale at Old Harbor Books, online at fineartscamp.org, and at the door.

 

Child Find

Screening Set

Sitka Borough School District will provide Child Find Preschool Screenings for children ages 3-5 on Monday, Sept. 16, at the Rasmuson Building on the SJ Campus.

An appointment is required by calling 747-8356.

The Child Find program is provided without charge to families who live within Sitka Borough School District boundaries. The purpose of the program is to identify children who are having difficulty in their development, and to provide special education services to them, when it is appropriate.

Parents may have concerns about their child’s development in the areas of hearing, vision, speech/language skills, motor skills, thinking skills and emotional or social skills.

 

Goat Hunt

Closure Noted

The Rosenberg Lake mountain goat hunt zone will close 11:59 p.m. Sept. 5, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports.

Hunt managers set a harvest quota of two males or one female for the Rosenberg Lake hunt zone of mountain goat hunt RG150 on Baranof Island. To date, two female goats have been harvested.

Those portions of Unit 4 not affected by the emergency order will remain open until harvest quotas are reached or the season concludes.
