Virginia Elizabeth Olney passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, September 4. She was 79.

Coast Guard City
Celebration Set
A communitywide celebration for ‘‘Sitka – A Coast Guard City’’ will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the Kimsham Ballfield complex.
It is to recognize the five Sitka Coast Guard units: Air Station Sitka, Cutter Kukui, Aids to Navigation Team Sitka, Marine Safety Detachment Sitka, and Electronic Support Detachment Detail.
All Coast Guard personnel and families are invited to attend as special guests. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided.
Calvary Chapel
Meets Sunday
Calvary Chapel Sitka will present “The Birthday of Jesus and the Feast of Trumpets (Jewish New Year)” 2:30 p.m. Sunday at 502 Hirst Street.
In 3 BC, the Jewish fall festival the Feast of Trumpets fell on Sept. 11. ‘‘Was Jesus the Christ, the Messiah, born on that exact day?’’ the church asks. Attendees can study what the Bible has to say about it from Genesis to Revelation.

Sitka Lighthouse owners are looking for art and framed photos to borrow of the lighthouse, for the upcoming Alaska Tourism Industry Association conference in Sitka Oct. 10-14.

MEHS to Update
Master Plan; Sets
Public Forum
Mt. Edgecumbe High School and the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development are initiating a planning effort to update the school’s long-range master plan.
As the initial step, the community, stakeholders, staff, students and families are invited to attend a public meeting to provide visioning input to help guide the project. A public forum will be hosted 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, remotely through Zoom.
The master plan will review existing conditions and opportunities, and make recommendations for educational programming, facilities and infrastructure, land use, and projected needs to meet the school’s mission.
Work includes understanding future educational program needs and use, identification of deferred maintenance, recommendations for capital renewal and new construction, and establishing community partnerships.

Health Promoting
Ideas Being Sought
At the 14th annual Sitka Health Summit Planning Day on Sept. 15 two health-related initiatives will be chosen as this year’s community goals.
Each new goal receives an award of $2,000 plus additional support. Past goals have included the Teen Center (The Cloud), the Fish to Schools program, Sitka Farmers Market, the Choose Respect mural project, bike/walk friendly community programming, Sitka Kitch, supporting the Hames Center, downtown revitalization efforts, becoming a trauma informed community, CO2 emissions reduction, construction of the ADA accessible Sitka Community Playground and the 2021-2022 goals of building cabins to end homelessness and starting the community recreation initiative.
Residents of all ages are asked to provide answers, in three sentences or less, to the question: ‘‘What inspiring health initiative deserves Sitka’s attention in the next 365 days?” Entries can be submitted by noon Sept. 9 at www.sitkahealthsummit.org, by calling 907-966-8674, or by dropping off a written entry at the Hames Center, Sitka Public Library, UAS-Sitka Campus or WildFlour Cafe. Submission boxes will be at all sites.
