Sitka Advised: Snow Coming

Posted

By Sentinel Staff

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Sitka, and forecast up to six inches of snow through Thursday, but said Sitkans should take the announcement in stride.

“This is midnight tonight through 9 p.m. Thursday, and it could be up to six inches, but also there will be some snow mixing in with rain,” said NWS Forecaster Pete Boyd. “What we have going for us is two things: one, most of the snow is going to be at higher elevations.” And the other, a fellow forecaster said, is that at sea level the snow accumulation is expected to be around two inches.

The Weather Service forecast tonight and intensifying on Thursday. It says: “Highest snow totals likely in the higher elevations and away from Sitka Sound. ... Snow accumulations may greatly vary over short distances.”

The next update is expected shortly after press time, around 4 p.m. today. Updates are posted on the webpage at weather.gov/juneau, and on social media: facebook.com/NWSJuneau

For the rest of the week, the forecast is for snow showers most days but a partly sunny day and a partly cloudy night Friday, followed by some sun Saturday then snow. Temperatures are expected to range from 23 to 38 degrees.
