Sitka Loses Power

    Power was knocked out citywide for about half an hour today while electric crews were resolving equipment problems related to Saturday’s outage.
    Power went out at 11:40 a.m. and was restored at 12:20 p.m., the electric department reported.
    The noon Chamber of Commerce luncheon and Assembly candidate forum went on as scheduled, with the 50 or so diners eating in the dark and the candidates fielding questions about their goals and qualifications.
    City officials said calls are continuing to come in from residents whose electronic equipment was damaged by the power surge that resulted from a Saturday accident, when a contractor’s excavator snagged the guy wire on a pole at DeGroff Street and Sawmill Creek Road.
    City Administrator Keith Brady said residents whose property was damaged in that incident are being asked to call the utility office at 747-1818 and provide their name, phone number and information on “what failed.”
    “We’re passing it on to our insurance,” Brady said. “We’re not claiming fault, what we’re trying to do is, we want to make sure people can live in their homes – it’s starting to get colder. We wanted to get something started so they can get their heat pumps back, their microwaves, stoves ....”
