Sitka Remains on ‘Medium’ Despite New Virus Cases

With two new positive COVID-19 tests added in the last two days, Sitka’s rolling average went up but was still in the “moderate” risk range today.

The two positive cases were an asymptomatic man in his 20s, who was tested Jan. 31 and received results on Feb. 1. The transmission classification was “community spread,” which means a source for transmission couldn’t be identified. For the other positive case, a man in his 20s, contact tracing was still in progress at press time today. He also was tested Jan. 31.

Seven current active cases are on Sitka’s dashboard. The dashboard also lists one positive test or more on six of the last seven days.

The 14-day rolling rate is .64 cases a day. Sitka peaked in early December at five cases a day but the number has been on a decline since then, with a few upticks following the holidays and over this past week.

The Sitka School District is open for in-person classes. It has its own dashboard, which today read: eight cases in the last 14 days, by testing date; and seven current active cases over 10 days.

That puts the school district on yellow – or “medium” risk – while the dashboard also notes zero cases connected to school district buildings.

Mt. Edgecumbe High School is at low risk for the campus, but there are restrictions when the Sitka community is at moderate, including no town leave. There are currently no active cases on campus.
