Sitka’s Virus Risk Still ‘Substantial’ Despite 2 Cases

Sitka stayed in the “substantial” risk range, despite two new cases added to community’s COVID dashboard for Tuesday.

The additional cases take the rate up a notch to 82.13 per 100,000, for the seven cases from the last week.

All of the positive tests from the last week are for residents, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services dashboard says.

Sitka on Monday went from high risk to substantial when the case rate went below 100. City officials notified the public that the mask requirement isn’t in effect when the risk level drops out of high, under city ordinance.

“If the risk level returns to high, before the ordinance expires on March 22, 2022, the ordinance will reactivate,” the notice says at cityofsitka.org.

Sitka has a cumulative case count of 1,111 residents and 102 nonresidents.

The vaccination percentages have been adjusted by the state in recent days to include the entire population, instead of the age 12 and up percentage, since the vaccines are available to the 5 and up population.

As a result, the percentage of those considered partially vaccinated has gone down, with 75 percent partially vaccinated, or 6,351; and 71 percent fully vaccinated, 6,018.

The state says some 2,250 booster shots have been administered, to Sitka’s 8,523 residents. A total of 82 percent (1,478) of those age 65 and up are listed as fully vaccinated.
