The polls at both of Sitka’s election districts will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Harrigan Centennial Hall for the 2018 general election on governor, U.S. House of Representatives, Alaska House of Representatives, and Ballot Measure 1, the “Stand for Salmon” initiative.
Republican Rep. Don Young is seeking his 24th term in the U.S. House, running against political newcomer Alyse Galvin, an independent who is on the ballot as the Democratic Party candidate.
Although Gov. Bill Walker has withdrawn as a candidate for re-election, his name will appear on the ballot, election officials said.
The candidates for governor are Democrat Mark Begich, Republican Mike Dunleavy, and Alaska Libertarian William “Billy” Toien.
District 35 Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, a Democrat, is seeking his fourth two-year term in the House, facing off against Republican challenger Richard Wein, currently a member of the Sitka City and Borough Assembly.
Ballot Measure No. 1 is “An Act providing for the protection of wild salmon and fish and wildlife habitat.” If enacted by the voters, it will place new permit requirements on development of lands with anadromous fish streams.
In accordance with the state constitutional requirement for periodic votes to retain sitting judges, the names of three First Judicial District judges will be on the ballot: Superior Court Judge William B. Carey and District Court judges Kevin G. Miller and Kirsten L. Swanson.
Ballots cast on Tuesday will be counted after polls close at 8 p.m. Absentee and advanced ballots will be counted “on the seventh day after election day,” the state Division of Elections said.
