Story Correction

The story on the front page of the May 12 edition of the Sentinel, “Downtown City Street Suddenly Is One-Way” – about American Street becoming one-way – said that Thad Poulson “objected to the lack of personal or public notice that is supposed to be provided when such changes are proposed.” In fact, the Public Works Department complied fully with the notice requirement in city code in chapter 11.36.010(A) that states: “The municipal engineer may designate any one-way street or alley and when so designated the municipal engineer shall place and maintain signs giving notice thereof. Ordinances or regulations pertaining thereto shall not be effective unless such signs are in place. Signs indicating the direction of lawful traffic movement shall be placed at every intersection where movement of Traffic in the opposite direction is prohibited.”

As the required signs were in place at the time American Street was designated one-way, there was no lack of “notice that is supposed to be provided,” as the Sentinel incorrectly reported. The Sentinel apologizes and regrets the error.
