Alaska State Troopers today identified a man who went missing Sunday near Point Baker as Arne Dahl, 27, of Point Baker.
Dahl and a woman, whose name has not been released, were the only people aboard the fishing boat F/V Randi Jo when it ran aground near West Rock around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. They got into a skiff and made it to a small rock before both the Randi Jo and skiff were lost, troopers said.
The woman and her dog spent 24 hours on the rock island before a Good Samaritan vessel rescued her Monday, and troopers were notified of the accident at 2:15 p.m. Monday. She declined a medical evaluation, troopers said.
She told troopers that Dahl had tried to swim to the next island on Sunday. Troopers didn’t know the distance, but West Rock, where the accident occurred, is about a half mile from Point Baker, on the northwest tip of Prince of Wales Island.
Two Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopters searched Monday without finding any signs of Dahl. Wrangell search and rescue and volunteers also conducted a thorough search, without success, troopers said. Next of kin have been notified, troopers said.
