William Walter “Bill” Winnop

William Walter “Bill” Winnop, 79, passed away peacefully on Jan. 19, 2015, in Sequim, Washington.  

Bill was born to Helen Hardy and Lawrence Winnop on May 8, 1935, in Ontario, Oregon.  He spent his youth riding bulls and breaking horses in Moses Lake, Washington.  

Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 and served from 1952 to 1956.  Part of his duties included bodyguard for Admiral Charles Momsen.  

Bill met his future bride, Donna McLeod, when he was 14 and she was 12; they were married upon his return from the Navy.

The young couple moved to Sitka in 1959 with two young sons, a job, and a place to live.  Bill worked at Woodruff Marine in Jamestown Bay and Alaska Lumber and Pulp until the late 1970s.  He then worked for the City of Sitka until his retirement, and served on the Police and Fire Commission from 1977 to 1980.

Bill was a lifetime member of the Sitka Sportsman’s Association, the NRA and the Elks Lodge.  He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed working with ivory and silver to fashion jewelry.

Bill and Donna moved to Sequim in 2006.

Bill is survived by his two sisters, Bonny Cave and Judy Barber; his wife of 58 years Donna; his son Scott and  wife Ann of Oceanview, Hawaii; his grandsons Trevor and Chad; his son Gary and wife Patti of Sequim; his granddaughter Kori and her husband Greg Postlewaite; his grandson Wayde, Jami Stutz, and great-grandson Ryan.

The Youth Totem Pole Project blessing of the log ceremony will be held at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center. Pacific High youths and carver Tommy Joseph will be introduced and the story and design of the totem pole project will be presented.

February 1975

Sitka Volunteer Fire Department reports ice on Swan Lake is 7-9 inches deep and safe for skating. However, officials warn skaters to avoid the end of the lake near Lakeside Grocery, since the ice is thinner there.
